so angry at myself for not checking further

i'm not making excuses but i have had a real hectic couple of weeks.
my 42 year old brother in law has been in hospital for a cancer op, i've been looking sfter my cousins 3 horses, work has been manic and we were going away this weekend.

on thursday i took my recently bonded rabbits into boarding. Gus needed his nails trimming and i checked the others while i was at it.
when i checked Buddy i felt something a bit hard in the fur right inside his back leg. i looked a bit more and there was a bit of hard poop so i gently pulled it out and couldn't see any thing else, he was wriggling so i let him go.

i called her today to collect the buns and she said she would get them in the carrier for me.
when i arrived she said there was a problem with Bud, it turned out the hard thing was a wound. :(

a flap of skin inside his leg is hanging off and there is a round wound the size of a 20p... i think it must be from when they were bonded as there has been no trouble since i got them home and kathy at the boarding place says they have been fine together.

so poor Bud has had this for nearly 3 weeks. he is at the vets in half an hour, hope its not infected.

i am so annoyed i never thoroughly checked what it was.

thanks Jane.

he is in surgery tomorrow for the wound stitching and the flap of skin tidying up (taking off) today he has had an anti inflammatory and antibiotic injection.

he is fine in himself, eating etc.. poor wee lad.

Don't beat yourself up over it. Had you known, you would have done something about it and you're doing something about it now. I'm sure he'll be fine but sending healing vibes all the same.

thankyou all.

dropped Bud off this morning, vet will call me later.

also brother in law home for now and cousin back so no horses to see to. can concentrate on getting Buddy right now.

Poor thing!
Don't blame yourself! If you had known you would have done something! And now you know, you're taking the best action possible!
i'm sure Buddy knows you love him very dearly!
How is Buddy now? xx

i got him back about 4.30 yesterday. the wound once the torn skin was cut off was quite big. my vet seems to think its only a day or two old which rules out it happened before i went away but its all a bit puzzling. she says it looks like it has caught on something and torn and there is definatley nothing i can see or find in my shed and run.
he has had a lot of stitches and has a little plastic collar on his head which he hates. :(

he had pain relief and has antibiotics for me to start on today. he is eating a little and seems happier to be back outside though i have put the doors back on the hutch at the back of the shed and had to put him in there seperate from the others so they don't pull at his stitches.

i hate he has the collar, i hate he is hurt and i hate i had to seperate him but needs must. i'm just hoping as they can all still see each other they will go back together when he is healed a bit more.

he is due another check up thursday.
again, thankyou everyone. :D

Jigsaw never got a collar when he had similar stitches on his leg, mainly because they glued it shut, however I personally would have refused one if they tried to pass it off to me.

Glad your bunny is doing well

i know it isn't ideal but i can't take the next week off to watch he doesn't chew his stitches and i certainly don't have another £300 to have it re done if he does let alone have him go through it all again.

when i am home i take the collar off and watch him to give him a break. he is eating with it on which was my main concern.
all worth it if it heals quickly and he can get back to normal.

i do hate him having the collar though.. . :(

Hope he makes a full recovery, sounds like you're doing all you can for him.

You can't always notice everything. I sometimes think I'm too paranoid. Took Doughnut to the rabbit specialist once as she had been ill 8 weeks earlier and couldn't face her going through pain again and not eating. She had slowed down eating again. They kept her in although they said she was the healthiest rabbit there. Had all tests, xrays etc. Came to over £300 when she was as right as rain! Now know not to panic if she doesn't eat for a while but just to keep an eye on her, it's only because she's such a greedy rabbit that she eats non stop and if she refuses pellets then there is something wrong!
