  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi my rabbit has E.cuniculi which he recoverd from using Panacur-it has now gone into his brain as he has head tilt and has started
to roll over-it is worse in his cage but he can still go in the garden .H e is still eating and on Panacur-Does anyone have any advise please as time is slowly running out for him -
Thanks Alison

Hi thanks-yes he was on metacam but has only been on panacur last seven days-he has been to the vets today-a sorry state on his back for most of journey as he wouldnt flip back over-the vet said she would give him an anti-inflamatory-Dexafort and Lapizole instead of panacur-I decided to put him on the grass once home expecting him to stagger around as if drunk but after about 5 mins his head was back in the centre and he was running about as if there was nothing wrong with him,he hasnt had a seizure since hes been out.I know this is a long process as once hes back in his cage he will prob roll over again-If the vet had said to put him down i may of agreed with her as he looked so poorley-now seeing him im glad i didnt. Its so nice to see him sitting up striaght-wont be counting my chickens just yet tho !!!!

The rapid improvement may well be due to the steroid injection. It's possible that the symptoms will return gradually as the effects of the steroid wear off- that doesn't mean he won't get better but it can be a long slow road to recovery with many ups and downs along the way. You will need to help him get enough food and particular fluid whilst he is ill as he may find it difficult to drink- plenty of moistgrass/ veg/herbs etc will help keep him hydrated.
You will also need to keep an eye on his 'down' ear asit can become dried out and sore/infected and is prone to injury too xx
