Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Gizmo on the mend

Gothymama

Warren Scout
I am so pleased to be able to report that Gizmo is improving brilliantly from his bout of GI stasis. We have seen a big improvement today in his munching, he's been munching more hay today than he has since we got him, which makes me wonder if he was beginning to get it before we got him. Had a battle with him tonight to get him to take his recovery food which is a good sign as up until now he was being submissive when feeding him it, as soon as i put him back in his hutch he went straight to the water bottle, i've also noticed that he has drunk more water in the last 24 hrs than since we've had him. As far as i'm aware the rabbits hadn't a very good diet with their previous owner and i'm now trying to correct that.

Over the last few days we've been changing everything for the bunnies, i've now took them off of woodshavings on the hutch floors, they now have thick towels lining the floors, i've introduced cardboard boxes sealed top and bottom with an entrance hole cut out and stuffed them with straw for new beds, my partner will make some permanent boxes for me when he gets time altho Kenzi is enjoying ripping his apart lol, i've also ordered new hay racks so that i can put them in the upstairs of the hutch so they've got hay top and bottom, i've stopped the gassy veggies completely for now for both rabbits, want to make sure kenzi gets a few weeks of just hay and pellet diet to clear his system out just in case, new litter trays are being bought tomorrow (cat ones) and i will also be introducing timothy hay into their diet as i believe they've never had it. I did find something interesting today though, i fed the rabbits a few dandelions each today and they both reacted as though they had never been given it before, both rabbits had to be encouraged to eat it, once they got going they scoffed them, it was only a few leaves to start, but i am so pleased Gizmo has made the massive improvement that he has it is such a relief :):):):):)
