  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is this even possible?

Smoo's abscess was just getting bigger. I was worried the penicillin had become ineffective due to heat so I picked up a fresh bottle from the vets. After two injections, so six days, I checked her abscess. And it's gone.

I really, really don't understand. Could it have popped inside her mouth? I can still feel a little bit there, but I know some of her jaw was shaved to try and remove all of it the first time, so it could either be the shape of her jaw and the abscess is completely gone, or the abscess has shrunk to a quarter of the size it was in six days. :? That's some magical penicillin. I'm really not complaining and I'll keep her on the injections for the rest of the course which will be either six or eight weeks in total.

I felt sick when I felt it and it was so big so I'm so happy it's tiny or gone, but how could it have happened in such a short time?

I know nothing of your bunnys abscess, but i had a bunny whos absess was draining into his mouth.

How did you discover this was happening? Can I do anything at home to find out, like smell her breath? If it is draining into her mouth do I need to do anything special like give oral antibiotics as well?

Smoo just has a recurring abscess on the lower left of her jaw. It was operated on and she went on antibiotics. It came back later and we tried penicillin injections which shrunk it right down and it disappeared completely. It's now come back for the third time so we're trying penicillin again. It was still growing so I was afraid that we'd have to operate again but within six days it just vanished.

My bunny had very bad teeth.
I would have to look up the exact secuence of events,:? but my bunny had a operation to remove a tooth root abscess.
I had injections to give him and had to clean and squeeze puss from the hole from the outside of his cheek daily.
eventually the hole healed over, I thought the abscess was gone as i felt no lump any more.
But on next trip to vet she looked at his teeth and could see abscess was draining into his mouth.
Vet seemd to imply, that though this was not ideal it was better than painful swelling abscess.
