  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spaying

Hi I am planning on spaying my rabbit:D. The clinic I usually go to spays rabbits and the vet says 80% of the time everything goes fine:).
Is that good enough??:? The vet said she spayed rabbits a couple of times and everything went well.

Doesn't sound as though your vet has much rabbit experience of she has only spayed two rabbits - I wouldn't be happy with that or with her comment that 80% of the time everything goes fine, which means it doesn't go well in 4 out of 20 occasions. I would much prefer to seek out a rabbit-savvy vet.

i think you need a vet who is experienced in spays. my tabby rabbit had a botched job and was ill for a fortnight. my cecile bun bun was neatly done at the same vets and well in days. depends who operates.

The vet has spayed rabbits more than two times and she said she has neutered lots of rabbits.

I, personally, would want a smaller risk than 20%. When I was quizzing my vet he said that on the spays and neuters on his practice, within the last year (at the time), he had done maybe about 100 and only one had had post op complications (and none during the op), and that was a very compromised bunny anyway. I would only entrust my bunnies to someone who has a very good track record with spays.
