  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vetergesic (Buprenorphine) V Torbugesic (Butorphanol )

Have any of you had a Rabbit prescribed Torbugesic as opposed to Vetergesic for pain relief ?

I have recently found that Torbugesic appears to be much more effective than Vetergesic. Also, according to a Vet at a Rabbit Health lecture a few months ago, there is doubt about whether Vetergesic is of any benefit for pain control in Rabbits. I admit I rubbished this idea :)oops:) as I felt that it had helped when my Vet prescribed it. But having now used Torbugesic for a few Rabbits (as prescribed by my Vet) I am beginning to wonder if Vetergesic is maybe not that effective :? Also, Torbugesic appears to be far less sedating than Vetergesic.

Little Oscar has been px vertegestic, however the last time we injected him with it it seemed to have no effect at all?. I will certainly be asking Jason about butorphanol (i had never heard of it).

Had you stored it at home in a pre drawn up syringe ? If so it will have spoiled after a few days and if exposed to light it will spoil very rapidly.

We have it in the vials and store it in a cool dark area. Its was quite strange, we have used it probably about 3 times before with good effect (combined with oral metacam) but the last time it did nothing. Little O went to the vets and was given an injection of metacam (which we now have as well).
