Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ear canker

Hi,
I was just stroking my rabbit Lucy and I have noticed scaly skin on the outside of her ears and a little on the inside, although it is not red or sore and she has not been scratching or shaking her head really. The first thing I thought it was, was ear mites/ canker so I have applied some herbal ear drops used for ear mites but does anyone have an idea what it could be, is it ear mites? what should I do? etc.
Thanks
Natasha

I would take her to be checked just incase but one on my buns had something like this. (If it's what I'm thinking of) I took her to the vet and they said it was harmless. It was right over a big vein so they said they would prefer to leave it and keep an eye on it. It ended up falling off but it left a scar.

Please get it checked just incase.

I would definitely not put any more ear drops into the ear canals without first having a Vet take a look down them with an otoscope. If there were to be any issues with the ear drums then putting ear drops in could do a lot more harm than good.
