View Full Version : LEAVING SHORTLY - Rabbit with broken back finds her forever home

I was in Pets at home - Sealand Road, Chester at lunchtime today and there is a sign up in the Adoption section - 2 year old dwarf lop named Honey needs a home, special needs, ask member of staff. I asked and spoke to Leanne who brought Honey out from the back, she's been there 4 months ???? and was brought in by a lady who said she could no longer look after her. Honey was really really skinny and bony and was taken to the vets and tested for various things and also vaccinated etc. After an x-ray it was found that her lower back has a bad break in it - no explanation from owner as to how it has happened. Honey is on metacam daily and can run about but is apparently incontinent and needs washes. She was very clean today and has put on weight. She is such a friendly, gentle and loving little soul and needs a home without young children really as possibly she was dropped??!! Can anyone help as being stuck in the store is not ideal for her although she does get attention and vet care at the moment.

Oh shucks - I should have taken a photo but never thought:( She is a light brown and dark brown medium sized dwarf lop (dark ears and nose) She honestly runs around fine despite this severe injury - unlike beautiful Trevor bless her - not knowing about injuries this bad I can only relay what I was told - she is a real sweetie though, snuggly and friendly - she just needs someone with specialist care and knowledge to give her the best. Might be best to phone P@H and ask about Honey the special bun in the adoption area out back :)

I suggested liz as spinal injuries can get worse and start to affect mobility later in life

If i wasnt in the process of trying to rescue another special needs bun I would have snapped this little one up but thinking about it sensibly I have to say no :(

I will help in anyway I can though

Yes there is - in the P@H store on Sealand Road, Chester (Greyhound Park) this Honey is brown whereas the one in the Stockport branch is black and white and has now found help. Staff in Chester confirmed to me yesterday she is still there and no one has made enquiries about her as yet  Therefore she still needs a loving home

Yes - the one at Chester has a broken back according to Lauren and other staff members - she had an X-Ray done at their vets

She is walking fine and is on metacam - more details can be given by Lauren at Pets at home, Sealand road - I have been to see her and she is a very loving girlie bun - just stuck out back of the store probably because people are too scared to take her as they wouldn't know what to do!

Bumping. Keep coming back to this but I really think I already have so much on my plate. Is it obvious from the info about her that she is poorly? As in if someone were to adopt her, would they be given instructions? What sort of special care would she need apart from administering metacam daily etc? I can't/ shouldn't really be considering this but perhaps I can find someone or erm, something....

Morning bunny lovers! As the person who put this on originally I also keep coming back - if anyone has any particular questions I suggest they ask P@H, Lauren, as everything I know is posted here. Honey is on metacam and needs botty washes and that's all I know - she is very much mobile and can walk/run around and is really affectionate. I don't know whether P@H would support her - I think they should/might in some way. I have 14 bunnies and really HAVE to say no as much as it saddens me greatly :cry: Honey is an adorable 2 year old dwarf lop, really affectionate and would be the perfect addition to a family preferably without little ones who might try to pick her up. By the way - she looks very much like GrahamL's Biscuit!!:love:

If someone can get details regarding what this bun will actually need, I may offer a space. It may have to be just till I can find a permanent spot somewhere or I may be able to fundraise for an extra wendy house. My Temp accomodation isn't good enough for long term (though I suspect better than she has right now!)

Is she needing washing of the rear every day? If so I will not be able to offer help as I only have outdoor accomodation and she will be at too higher risk of fly strike. Also would PAH spay her? could someone ask?
I am in Somerset, but If I am suitable, I suspect I can persuade OH to go get her or at least part way;)

Edited to add....

Sorry crossposted!

Would rear guard be enough to keep flies away with the daily addition of a botty wash?
I really feel for this bun, but I don't think I am going to be suitable for her:cry:

I have put as much information as I can on here - so please if anyone has ANY questions regarding Honey then please phone P@H and if possible speak to Lauren on 01244 383551. I am sorry I can't tell you any more than I have already put on here :cry: but Lauren knows everything about her and should be able to answer any questions you might have. Also when I saw her botty and underneath area - it was all 100% perfectly clean and had benefitted from a good trim. It might not be as bad as sounds.

Georgeypudding

IMO she will need more than just rearguarding :(

If I had rescue back up I'd offer to have her as a foster but I just cannot afford the vet bills

she will need x-rays to asess how much damage is done to her spine and then i would have thought some form of therapy depending on what damage is done?

Rearguard is no use on a rabbit that needs regular bum baths as it makes it ineffective. If she does need regular bum baths then she definitely needs to be a house rabbit.

That is brilliant. Well done. I was trying to think of ways of getting her but she is much better off with you, who has such vast experience of all sorts of things rabbit. I *think* there is some confusion about honeys as there appear to be several bunnies of that name in different P@H around the country - maybe these are the other arrangements? No one had; you are the only person who has offered to take Honey from Chester P@H. I kept checking back and was relieved when you did as she needs a comfortable home asap. I am just saying that earlier in the thread there was confusion over another bunny of the same name in another P@H with back issues so I *think* the other arrangements mentioned are for that bunny, not the one you are taking for Humph's cage. :D

There was another needy bunny called Honey in another PaH branch a week or two ago - she had flystrike though, not back problems, but she was rehomed a week ago according to their FB page & so I'm not sure how the confusion over arrangements has arisen. :?

Hopefully it will be good to have something positive to focus on after losing Humph, Liz.

Ah yes, you did and then you sort of kept Trevor's name, so in theory that could have been Steve's turn and he missed his chance ;)

Just seen her on FB, she is gorgeous

So sorry not been on sooner - every day is a hectic one at my house! Anyway beautiful sweet Honey is at mine - safely in a clean fresh hutch, chomping away on hay and drinking lots of water! She has already jumped up and down off a 'ledge' in the hutch after chomping hay which was higher up. She is a real cutie! WHO WANTS TO SEE SOME PICTURES??????

This sweet little girl has just enjoyed a potter outside in the fresh air - she can hop about but slightly drags her back legs when she moves forward. She also washes her face with one paw as she may appear to need the other to either balance/steady herself or maybe take a bit of weight off her back end if it hurts. She has just had her tea alfresco :D tonight and is now having a well earned rest

This beautiful girl is off to become a Rainbow Rabbit today!! Yayyy! Honey/Shula is just having some breakfast - catching up on the Olympics - has had a potter about outside and will be collected by Webble (Kath) in less than an hour. I will miss this little inquisitive girl but I am happy that I was able to do my bit to help her and am so pleased for her as she will be in the best place real soon - making lots of friends and getting the first class care and attention she needs. Thank you to ALL those who have got involved - and no doubt we all look forward to hearing about her progress and seeing lovely pics from Liz. A few people have kindly offered to make a donation towards Honey/Shula's future care - please PM Liz (Hugo's There) who will let you know the details of how you can make your contribution. Thank you again bunny friends xx

:D A very big well done and thank you to h Sue Liz and Kath and everyone else involved for helping Shula to find a new home.

My Sootys first partner was called Honey and had similar problems. She had been a breeding rabbit before I rescued her. The vet said her back had been broken but had fused  She went on to live till a good old age as a house rabbit with me. x

Good to hear that 'poorly' bunnies can in many cases go on to live happy and healthy lives after a bad start x
