  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Slightly matted fur on foot?

Finx has a slightly matted patch on one of her feet. I've pulled it about a bit (much to her disgust) and there's no broken skin or anything like that, it's just a dried muddy patch that's stuck together.

I'm reluctant to trim it for her as their run is on grass with mesh over the top and I've always been super aware of the possiblity of sore hocks, but they've been fine for almost a year now.

What do you think? They're due their vaccinations and nail clipping soon, should I just ask the vet to see what she can do if Finx hasn't fixed it by then? Or does this need attention?

Have you tried gently grooming the foot? I've got a little pets grooming set with tiny brushes in and I find them brilliant for grooming feet. I have to do mine every so often as they have a habit of standing in their litter tray for prolonged periods of time meaning wee wee stains on little feets!

As long as the skin isn't torn and there's no sign of discomfort I'd leave it, just mention it to the vet. If the bun shows any sign of being uncomfortable or the skin does tear (obviously there's risk of infection then) I'd seek attention asap but as we know, they're super at keeping clean so Finx might see to it before your vet visit anyway!

I just pick any mats of fur out. You can generally tease small parts of the mat out at a time.
