Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Fractured left hind leg

MoBo

Alpha Buck
Hey guys, im new to this forum so bear with me! My gorgeous female netherland drawf rabbit leaped out of my arms on Tuesday and fell quite horridly. We rushed her to the emergency vets as ours were shut and he was awful with her  He picked her up by the ears and pulled so hard she struggled like mad, then he pinned her down to the table and moved her leg all over and said its a possible fracture and gave her a shot of pain relief and that was that. We were not happy at all and took her to our normal vets the next day where the vet was so gentle with her and said she can feel 'something' up her leg. So she took her in, sedated her (after a good few attempts as Bo is very very stubborn) and x-rayed her. Later that day it was confirmed she had fractured her hind leg quite high up, and we were given 3 options....

.....Cage Confinement for 6 weeks.......Specialist surgery that is a 50/50% success, which is a 2 hour drive away......or amputate!!

We have decided to give Bo a chance as the vet said she is very compact and muscley on her legs. We dont care if it does heal wonky, it just adds character!! She is on daily pain relief and is eating and drinking absolutely fine. she is hopping about in her cage with her poorly leg tucked up

I was wondering if anyone can give some helpful advice on aiding her through this tough time. Her mate Mo is always with her and wont leave her, so she has a cage companion. We obviously give her her pain relief, and put hot water bottles next to their cage to ease the pain and keep them warm.

Has anyone had a similar if not same experience?

One of my Rabbits (Harry) sustained a compound fracture of his femur. He had the leg amputated and he adapted immediately and continues to cope very well. For him pinning was not an option and the potential for infection (open fracture) and the development of arthritis meant amputation was best for him

I hope that your Rabbit's fracture heals well. I would advise you keep a close eye on her gut motility as pain and lack of exercise could lead to gut slowdown/gut stasis. She may also need some help keeping herself clean, especially her bum and the ear on the same side as the fractured leg. The ear may get gunked up.

I'd also keep a close eye on her 'good' hind leg to make sure that she does not start to show signs of a sore hock from taking all the weight on that leg.

Thanks for the advice!!

Ive cleaned her ears today and i am also keeping an eye on her bum to make sure its clean. im also checking for urine burn!!

Hopefully it wont come to amputation, but from what ive seen of her jitting about if it did come to that i know she'd adapt well!!

I haven't been in the same situation but I hope your bunny heals well.
I hope you don't feel too bad about what happened- I stepped backwards onto one of mine (Mango Fattyharebit) once and broke her tail. It healed quickly though xx

Sorry can't offer advice - but I do know that I wouldn't be taking my rabbit to a vet who picks up my bunny by its ears!

Sadly we had no choice as our usual vets was closed, we had to go to the one who deals with their 'clients' instead!! But we went back to our normal vets the next day and the lady was great with her :)

We are unsure of what to do now, we want to put in a complaint but the guy we want to complain about owns the practice - so we are not sure if it would be dealt with..................any advice?? xx
