Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Metacam- administering through food?

Hello folks.

Looking for a quick answer to this Q as the vet is busy at the moment. My rabbit Ruby has broken her toe and the vet gave me metacam yesterday after examining her. I was shown how to do it but Ruby struggles so much, even in a towel, that I'm worried the meds are causing more distress than actually helping her. She did take the meds on her Burgess feed this morning (I had to give her a little more than usual). Is this acceptable? Does anyone else give metacam on food?

Thanks,
Sophie

Yes, I do! Sometimes soak a tiny piece of bread in the Metacam and then wrap it in a basil leaf. I know they shouldn't really have bread, but don't reckon a tiny piece will hurt. Have also put it on the pellets when they have these in the evening. Much less stressful. Wish I could find an easy way of administering eye drops!

We are very fortunate when it comes to Metacam. Bo who has just fractured her hind left leg is on cage confinement for atleast 6 weeks! She is a house rabbit along with her partner in crime Mo so it is tough to keep her in a cage 24/7. I put a drop on my finger and she laps it up like its going out of fashion, so because she has to have 6 drops a day at the moment she is in her element! Mo however is the awkward one. Shreddie's worked well but now he has sussed it!

Metacam tastes quite sweet so he make just like it off the spoon, i found one of mine sussed the odd things i was trying to give it to her on and was having none of it. She just licks it off the syringe now...

Actually I thnk I was wasting my time trying to 'disguise' the Metacam - I think Bobby would have just licked it straight off a spoon.

Bumble was nowhere near that easy disguised it on everything she knew and wouldn't eat them. We had to struggle syringing it down her
