stasis after teeth extraction! :(:( hospitalised Chrisi

Alpha Buck
My bunny Christina is 3 years old, and this year she had a lot of problems with her teeth. At first vets suggested no removal for her front teeth, but then situation got worse and she had her two front upper teeth removed. After a long recovery she started eating again with appetite and now her condition is more or less under control. The down front teeth are affected as well (one of them is not smooth and doesn't grow) but one of her down teeth is growing so fast now, that she doesn't have the upper ones! Of course, the plan was to get the down ones removed as well, but last week she got something like an allergic reaction to something, and even the vet didn't knew from what - she got 3 wounds suddenly, and since our best suggestion was that it was because of the mosquitoes I took some extra care to isolate her from them. Now the wounds are getting better, and the upper-teeth bone infection is almost gone. She also got castrated this year, because the vets had doubts she may have tumors (her uterus was visible on the X-ray) but in the end it turned out to be just blood and cysts, so everything was ok. So for the last months she got 2 operations...and a third one to come...In your opinion, should I postpone the third one as long as possible by getting her growing tooth cut from time to time or should I hurry and do it quickly, so that everything is over asap and she can take her time to recover? She is also on antibiotics from 2 months almost, which scares me a bit, but the vets say it should be like that. She is a brave bunny but it seems to me already too much stress for her. Now she seems fine - she eats, drinks water, runs around and poops normal-sized balls all around the flat, but I though that since her case isn't complete yet, it's good to have some advices from you:)

Chrisi's lower incisors will be removed tomorrow. It is the last operation she has to overcome for the teeth problems, and hopefully she will end up with those series of vet's visits. She is eating fine and seems overall ok, but last time her teeth were extracted she felt terrible for more than a week....cross your fingers that everything is fine and that she recovers well. She has a bunny doctor from Holland:) till now she proved herself very competent and careful, so let's hope that last obstacle will be gone tomorrow!

Just wishing you and Chrisi all the best for the op tomorrow. There are many members on the forum who have bunnies with no front teeth. They manage well with a slight adjustment to their diet. Food may need to be grated or finely chopped for them to be able to pick it up and chew, to make up for having no incisors to chop it as they go along.

I find that it quite often takes a week or 10 days for a bun to recover from dental surgery and be eating normally again. Just keep an eye on her until you are sure everything is OK.

I have had a couple of rabbits on various antibiotics for much longer than a couple of months. She will also need pain relief (eg Metacam) for a while.

She is a lucky bun to be cared for so well by you.

My rabbit Toby has no front teeth at all. Your bunny will recover and will adapt really well.
It might be tough at first and I suggest being careful about the size of food etc that your bunny is given. The smaller the better when you get her home so it encourages her to eat it.

thank you! my boyfriend will pick her up after work, on the phone the doctor said that everything was ok and that the operation was successful but that one of her eyes got dry during the operation so it needs some eye drops again. I am very impatient to see her!

Chrisi just came back home, she is very dizzy and her gums are much more sore than last time:( she keeps her eye closed, the vet gave us EDTA eye drops - did somebody use them? I have to put them once per 2 hours. I just fed her - she ate fine, perhaps I'll give her another portion later but now I'll leave her have some calm. Should I also give her some water? Her food is like a marmalade as a substance - quite watery but still.. Besides of that, she is taking 0.2 ml of Enroflaxacil as an antibiotic twice a day, 0.3 Meloxydil as a painkiller and 0.2 Degan to keep her tummy and appetite good 3 times per day. Since we are in Bulgaria I guess you may not know some of the medication - I have no idea if they import them and if yes, from where.Thank you for your support!

Dear Chrisi is in stasis!I'm in a total panic! She was recovering magnificently from the tooth extraction, she was eating and drinking and all! And today when I came back from work her bowl was full, her water as well....She was trembling and her tummy was as a rock, although her guts were soft. Her tummy was rumbling and she didn't want to move, unless I chase her around - even then she avoided getting up. Today a lot of her fur fell, I wonder if she ate of it.... I tried to force feed her but she was spitting everything out, and seemed unable to swallow food-I could give her water, tough. I called our clinic, unfortunately our doctor which is an amazing bunny specialist is in vacation:( The emergency doctor said that I could bring her for a hospitalization or that I could feed her every two hours, massage her belly and try to make her eat. But obviously she was in pain so I brought her and they took her...the other bunny doctor will be working in the morning so she will take her on. She dropped a few round poos before going to the vet...I reacted in the quickest way possible but she needs a lot of good vibes!

Sending all my vibes over to poor Chrisi, really hoping she's ok

I don't know - the vets told me that I can go and see her at 13h, and that if there's something wrong they'll call me immediately. They didn't call so I suppose she's fighting. I will go there in around an hour, and I'll update you all. Thanks for the vibes !

I just came back from the clinic. The vet told me she definitely has stasis and is gazy, they give her fluids, cerucal to make her guts move and force feed her. They say they managed to. With the food, the painkillers and the fluids Chrisi looked a bit more lively - she licked me and came to me, and seemed in a good mood tough her stomach was still very hard. There was a lot of pee and a little bit of poo in her cage there, not so well shaped, but still some poo, which means that her guts haven't stopped working completely, no?Today she showed interest in food by herself. They said they would like to keep her for a day more and make an x-ray of her belly, so that they are a bit more sure how are her guts.
Our usual vet is on vacation, and the current one i didn't like that much, but he said that our vet monitors the case through mobile phone and gives advices when she is able to. What an amazing specialist she is! I would like to tell you more about her, so that the health section is a bit less grim.
When I understood Chrisi has a bone infection and needs a specialist that should take over her case in general, I loooked and looooked at the pictures and the descriptions of the vets..I picked up a bunny doctor, that seemed nice and friendly. I have to tell you that I had terrible experiences with vets and doctors, so I wanted to have the best for bunny-bun - someone that will understand how amazing she is and will be dedicated enough. When she was on a shift i went to the clinic but it seemed the receptionist messed up the schedule, so she called me our vet. She is from the Netherlands, just like Chrisi's breed:):)I never saw anyone like her - she shows so much care and dedication! When she does a bit of a painful teeth or gut check, she squeezes Chrisi and tells her she's sorry. She is a bunny doctor and an anesthesiologist so a perfect combination for a bunny that needed 3 operations. When she had to perform an extra procedure after her dental (which was the teeth extraction), she called me to tell me I had to pay extra 175 leva for it. I screamed at the phone that I don't have that much (my average salary is like 400, I am still a student and work part time only).Anyway, we got on. She felt guilty it seems so from this day on she does her x-rays, eyes checks and blood tests for free when the reception isn't following her, and she snatches me medication from time to time. I bet you don't know anyone like her!:):)
So I really hope everything will be ok....cross your fingers for her still...

Just wanted to inform you in case you read that our bunny is home again and feels a lot better. We still force feed her, rub her belly and all, but she is in a much better mood, poos and pees, although not in the best shapes, but it is a progress. Today I gave her a piece of my grandfather's pears and she went crazy about it! it felt nice to see her eat something with enthusiasm. Her hair falls off quite much now, and the doctors said it is a result, together with the stasis, of the stress she experienced because of the operations. I ordered her some panel house today - it will be like 120/60/50, as I told you she is a free indoor bunny but when we are not at home or when we sleep we put her in a cage that is big but the entrance is on the top so we have to put her out and in. The panel house seems to have an entrance on the side so she'll be able to go in to relax, poo and pee (If i manage to potty-train her), eat and drink by herself, which I hope will relieve the stress of lifting her.She doesn't eat quite a lot of hay after the teeth extraction so I ordered a few types to try to find the tastiest, as well as some funny thing in which I can plant my own fresh grass (someone said it's bad for dwarf bunnies -is it?).Any other ways to make a bunny less stressed and recover better?Or recommendations for a really tasty hay that will give Chrisi the appetite for food?
