When we were in the vets today (getting our cat Micah vaccinated) there was a leaflet on rabbit vaccination that my mum pointed out. I picked it up and read it, and when we were going home I asked if I could have Freddy vaccinated for my birthday. The answer was no, because:
. He has been healthy for his whole life and hasn't caught anything yet. To which I said that he could get one of the illnesses at any time which lead to...
. He is in an enclosed garden and no other animals can get in there. If we were in a rural area, she would think about it, but Freddy is safe where he is.
. The drug companies use propaganda to get people to vaccinate. She said that if a vaccination for rats came out and was publicised (I've got pet rats) then everyone would want that. I tried to explain that that’s different and that the illnesses rats get are completely different.
. Vaccines can cause more harm than good with all the stuff that is in them. Humans try not to be overloaded with vaccines, so people should do so with rabbits. I did tell her that lots of people have their rabbit vaccinated with no problem...
. Not many people have their rabbits vaccinated, and not many get the illnesses. I said that most responsible rabbit owners would vaccinate, and then she started saying that lots of people don't even get their cats vaccinated.
. And finally, as he is old (about 8 ), it is just not worth doing.
Looks like Fred won't be getting any vaccinations. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can get for him for my birthday that isn't vaccinations or bigger housing (not enough room)?
