House bunny contracting myxi/vhd?

My neighbours house rabbits died of myxi, one neighbour lost 2 rabbits to myxi and the neighbour the other side of the road lost 4 or 5 house rabbits to myxi at the same time.

The risks are the same whether inside or outside buns

Unfortunately I have just been in conversation with someone who wanted their rabbit boarding and the vet told them they didnt need their bun vaccinating cause it was an indoor bun!!!!!!!!! Wall, head, bang

Oh dear. Ironically, I would say VHD si actually more likely in house rabbits due to how it's transmitted.

Please could you tell me how a house bun is more likely to get VHD as I genuinely do not know

RHD (VHD) is spread by direct contact between rabbits (both wild and domesticated) and but also via indirect contact. Possible sources of indirect transfer are people, clothing, contaminated hutches and bedding, as well as insect vectors such as fleas and flies

2 cases of myxi here were indoor buns.
Suki got nodular & recovered.
Alistair, her partner, started off with just manky eyes, then it hit his breathing, went full blown & I lost him:cry:

Both were vacs & within 6 months of their vacs (5mths rings a bell) - although at that time I vaccinated annually

Exactly that.

If you bring VHD in one your shoes, or coat, or trousers if you brushed against something, you will spend far more time indoors and around a house bunny than you will with an outside bunny. Much easier and faster to transmit to a housebunny, especially if you have a set up that means you don't actually go into your outdoor rabbit's area much, if at all.

Will Gypsy still be OK to have her vacs done even though she has EC and is also on metacam for osteoarthritis?

That will be one to discuss with the vets, however, there are times not to vaccinate- when the risks of vaccinating are stronger than the risks of not vaccinating. If you're not sure if she is fit enough, and decide not to, you can reassess all the time and then have it done if you feel she is.

I wouldn't vaccinate with a rabbit with an ongoing infection, due to the battering on the imunne system, I do however, have a healthy rabbit vaccinated who does have arthritis and some other very strangely problematical rabbits vaccinated too. Equally, I've had other rabbits not vaccinated.

If you do what you think is best for Gypsy then that will be the right thing to do :)

Its a difficult situation having a conflicting opinion with a vet, people automatically think that the vet is trained the vet must be right, how do you explain most vets do not specialise in buns.

I would imagine the risk is no different.

Worries me, as like you Sparklefairy I have a decision to make on whether V has his second myxi of the year. He's been on abx for months. I just don't know what to do...

Ah this happens all the time according to my vet.
I would give the person info from RWAF and also explain that myxi can be transferred through biting insects.
Also what's been said already regarding vhd.
Another problem my vet has to deal with is a certain pet shop selling buns and telling their owners not to vacinate if they stay indoors. She's sent many an angry letter/email. :?

I had two foster bunnies that died of VHD within a few days of getting to their forever home. It was thought the house may have been contaminated from previous occupants. The virus can live dormant for years on surfaces and isn't killed by bleaching.
