Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

shortening nails

Anyone got any tips on how to shorten nails?
Buffy is a mini rex who is prone to sore hocks, one of the reasons I agreed to rehome her because her previous owner was unable to manage this. I have had only a few problems they haven't regrown fur over the 6 months I've had her but haven't looked red or angry. Her previous owner had allowed her nails to become very long under the belief this would reduce the sore hock problem. My difficulty is the quick inside the nail has become very long so I can't actually clip them down very far. Currently I am keeping her on a deep bed of hay, and a bed of hay in the run also because I have noticed when she walks on the concrete she looks very uncomfortable as her nails are curled under so she's walking on the back of her heels. The deep hay does solve this to a point but I can see its not an ideal long term solution.

You need to clip them little and often. The more you do it eventually the qwick will receed so you can get them short enough.
