  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Poorly Teeth....what would you do?

Poppy has on-going dental issues, I am going to try & keep things short.

She is 5 and her incisors are nearly completely shot, she normally eats with gusto (albeit slowly), but this morning veg was left from overnight & although she has eaten some pellets, she didnt finish them & hasnt bothered with the veg which this morning which isnt normal. She also seems to be constantly grooming and pulling fur despite several treatments, my vet & I think this could now be linked to the teeth issue (maybe discomfort).

My question is, would you have the incisors out? Considering her age, oh....and the major fact she is allergic to penicillin so cant have that after the operation.

I knew it would come to this at some point, im very worried.

She could live foe another 5 years so I would talk to vet about having them out. One of mine has just had hers out, no problems whatsoever.

If she is otherwise in good health I would not hesitate in having the Incisors removed. Only by a Bunny Savvy Vet though, not one with little Rabbit specific experience.

See this is what is concerning me. My vet is very rabbit savvy (he was recommended to me on here and is quite well know as specialising in rabbits I believe), however, he seems to think it is best to manage the situation as long as we can, he said if she was younger he would have taken them out but is hesitant due to her age (she is actually nearly 6).

My main worry is actually controlling the infection after the operation due to her not being able to have penicillin.

Her top incisors are very short & one is cracked in the middle, the bottom ones are slightly crossed over. They are not pussy as they have been in the past so I guess it could be her molars that need burring, altho checking those will I am sure break the incisors.

I'd have them out. The penicillin isn't a big deal as rabbits usually have baytril which isn't a penicillin.

Infection is just as likely to occur as a result of damaged enamel I would have thought :?

I honestly would want to consider removal. I had a 7 year old Doe who suddenly developed Incisor problems having never had any Dental issues before. At first they were managed with regular Dentals. But it became obvious that the Incisor malocclusion was also causing molar problems meaning that she was needing Dentals ever 4-5 weeks. She had her Incisors removed. There was no post op complications and she only needed treatment for molar spurs every 3-4 MONTHS after that.

Thank you for the advice. I think they do need to come out, they have felt like a ticking time bomb for some time. They are in such poor condition they can only be causing problems & not helping her in any way.
