  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi everyone!
Just come back from the vet's where I took Jasper because he's been sneezy for the last few days. I figured I'd monitor it but then yesterday I noticed a little white, snotty mucus under his nose  luckily I'm off work today so I whizzed him down to the vet's (which is his least favourite place, second only to being forced into being held for any length of time...) where I think the vet was a bit surprised to see someone who knew such a bizarre amount about upper respiratory tract infections in rabbits, but had never had one before (I read a LOT...)! As per my best guess, I was right and we were packed off with some antibiotics which I'm gonna have to syringe feed him. I'm not looking forward to it...
Mostly I just wondered if anyone had any advice, either relating to syringing (we've done it before with him but any tricks/tips would be appreciated!) or ways to prevent a flair up/ease any problems he has.
Thanks guys

Its what a lot of vets will prescribe but in my experience it may not be a long enough course so don't worry if he isn't fully recovered after the seven days. If he's still showing symptoms towards the end it may be an idea to ask your vet if they can extend his course of meds.

Baytril doesn't suit every URI but there are plenty of alternatives your vet can try if needed.

Thank Amy! The only thing that I'm still wondering about... Both the vet and yourself have spoken about 'symptoms' persisting... the only sign Jaspie's been showing is sneezing, is this enough of a concern on its own? Also, it may sound weird... is monitoring your Bun's temperature yourself the 'done' thing? I don't want to cause him any distress but it may be a useful monitoring tool... the OH is a doctor so is very adept at such things (I'm picking it up, we've been sneak feeding his Baytril with melon and a hypodermic all week!)
Thanks :D
