  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

You can buy it OTC from most large pharmacies :)

Mine contains;

5x 1ml syringes
5x 10ml syringes
1x bottle of emeprid (prescription)
1x bottle of metacam (prescription)
1x tub of sudocrem
1x fibreplex tube
1x nail clippers
1x pair of tweezers
1x spare nebuliser adapter kit
1x pair of scissors
1x pack of cotton wool pads
1x roll of kitchen roll

This has become adapted, and mainly is re Ginger. It's not so much a first aid kit, but a 3 drawer plastic unit

That's a really good idea to be honest. I ad never thought of anything like that.

I wish I could be that organised GrahamL.

There's a sticky on this somewhere.

While it is always useful to have a few bits and pieces to hand, the most essential elements of the kit are your vet's phone number, a knowledge of how to get to the emergency vet if it is based elsewhere, and a credit card!

I wouldn't necessarily see it as a good thing for people to be holding things like metacam unless there are specific veterinary reasons for it and your vet has agreed that you need it for use as necessary. There is an enormous risk that problems go undiagnosed for longer if people are self medicating rather than seeking early treatment for underlying causes, plus there are some other meds (such as steroids) which cannot be given at the same time that metacam is in the body, so unless a vet has verified the necessity first, it is possible that the correct treatment could be delayed. Generally, there's a good reason why prescription only medicines are prescription only!

Isn't that prescription only though? Surely the vets will only prescribe it if they feel it's needed?

I needed some recently and what was left over my vet said to keep safe as its useful to have around. Obviously call her first before I give it!

Lots of useful lists here and on the links provided, going to start building up the kit over time

I have
2 small syringes
2 large syringes
Critical care
Avipro plus
fibreplex
panacur
procprobiotic
science recovery food
nail clippers
baby scissors

^^ This.:thumb:

Although I almost always have Metacam and a few other meds available I don't administer without confirming with my vet. As pointed out there are many medications that are incompatible and self-administering may compromise a vet's ability to prescribe a more effective treatment.

The best item in my kit was given to me by my vet. It is an open referral to a specialist rabbit referral clinic two hours drive away. It has all our rabbits listed for any emergency when his practice is not available. The local emergency vets here are about as useful as an ashtray on a motorcycle.

One thing I don't think has been mentioned is a Snugglesafe, they can come in very handy to keep a bun warm through a lot of conditions causing body temperature loss and even valuable when transporting to the vet. Also having on hand gripe water or simethicone for emergency bloat episodes when there is enough experience to accurately diagnose.
