Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mites/Dandruff

I've noticed that my bunny has a few patches of scaly dandruff on his back and moving down towards his back end. There are a few areas that are worse around what looks like new patches of fur growing through and presumably they have been annoying him as there are small scabs there

I've also noticed small brown flecks in his white fur (flea dirt?)

Looking through the threads there appear to be a variety of treatments that people use/have used - Spot On, Xeno450, Stronghold, Advocate and Beaphar.

Can anybody recommend which one to use ie something I can buy from Ebay or other outlet, or do I need to go to the vet and get it diagnosed and something from them? I have put on some Advantage which the vet gave me on a previous occasion as part of my healthy Pet package, but I'm not sure if this is what I need as it appears to be more for fleas than mites.

Our vet gave us a course of Spot On as Leo had mites very bad when we got him, within 2 weeks of applying that and brushing the 'dandruff' out with a comb and washing (with luke warm water) over his bald bit it was fine :) his fur grew back quickly too :)

my vet suggested advantage. normally my vet is amazing but I'm seeing very little change after two applications (4 weeks apart) so will be watching with interest

Whilst trawling through the internet looking for info, I saw an article which said that Advantage is totally ineffective at treating mites  I have just ordered some Beaphar Spot On instead and hope that works.

Personally I'd take bunny to the vets and find out exactly what it is then you can get the treatment that will be effective rather than waste money trying different things.

Having said that if it's definitely mites I've used the xeno spray (might be 450, not sure) on vet recommendation and had success. They did also have an ivermectin injection though.

Well, it appears to be working :D

Applied some last weekend and have been combing him through every couple of days. Just did it tonight and there is far less dandruff there. Will still continue with the combing as the spot on is meant to last for four weeks, and hopefully it wil have cleared up completely by then.
