Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

My Rabbit is on Panacur and antibiotics and is still having siezures

Lillith

New Kit
Hello

Just wondering if anyone could help me. I have a 3 year old rabbit has been having siezures, took him to the vet they put him on panacur and took a blood test, on the panacur he was still having siezures. The blood test results came back and beacuse he was having siezures near the time of the blood test it did'nt help them so she gave me Beytrill an antibiotic. It worked for 8 days and now he is back to having siezures..

The vet I'm with are having problems because they tell me, there not a specialist in rabbits and theres not much out there for them, but they think it might be these. The vet told me it could be brain spores he would need a mri to be sure, or liver failure which will need an ultra scan. Which are both costly and still may not help. Me and my partner are up all night beacuse any noise he makes I believe it could be a seizure, the vet told me just pad out the cage with towels or soft items, tried this and lost two nails in the process and it did'nt hold him just made him worse. So I have to be hands on all day, they told me hes a healthy rabbit everything that I was doing was well and these things just happen.

Someone mentioned its because he has not been neutered that could be the reason for these siezures ?The reason I never got him neutered the first vet I took him to mentioned have you had him neutered, I said no, he said has he had any behavior changes, I siad no he had not and the vet was supprised and said he should be okay without one. At the age of 2 I asked should he be neuterd then they told me I had left it late and would probably stress him out.

Any advice would be helpful,Thanks for reading

Hello

Am I correct in assuming that you are not in the UK ? I only ask as if you were we could try to suggest a Rabbit Specialist Vet near where you live.

With regards to the seizures it sounds as though the Vet thinks that they may be the result of damage done by a protozoal parasite- Encephalitozoon Cuniculi (EC)

https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&...h6xqzE&sig=AHIEtbQgBtYthXvyO2DCbMXV65y2_1FVhQ

If this were to be the case then unfortunately the damage done may be permanent. Sometimes drugs used to treat epilepsy can be useful in reducing the severity/frequency of the seizures.

Another possibility is abscessation on the brain as a result of a bacterial infection. When on the Baytril did your Rabbit have any seizures at all ? Did they start up again once the antibiotic was stopped ?

I think that if the seizures were the result of Liver failure then your Rabbit would be exhibiting other very obvious symptoms too eg anorexia, weightloss, depression and lethargy, ascites etc

Thank you for replying

My rabbit is still taking baytrill, I belive its the 10th day on the medication and is still having siezures. I am in UK the bedfordshire area, I have been informed rabbit specialist are costly by my vet, and I don't have insurance .

He takes a while to come out of the siezures and acts very timid and scared but then about 2 hours later starts eating and drinking normaly

Would your Vet be willing to consult with a Rabbit Specialist on your behalf ? If your Vet admits to not being too 'Rabbit Savvy' then I would hope that he/she might seek some input from another Vet ? Cant harm to ask him/her.

siezures

I don't think she would object, shes has tried her hardest to help, she done her first rabbit blood test and tried phoning round for siezure medication for rabbits. Would a rabbit speacialist take time in talking to her, would'nt know where to start in finding one?

She could try calling Mark Rowlands here :
