  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Please help me with my rabbit's digestive problem? AS HE EATS SOMETHING, HE POOPS OUT

Young Bun
My bunny had got diarrhea this morning.
His poop was watery. And he was pooping everywhere in the house.
I called my vet, and he told me to urgently start hydrating my bunny using Hydratinng solution of Water, Salt and sugar, or simply by getting the O.R.S, available in market, recommended by W.H.O.
SO I STARTED HYDRATING HIM. I gave him syringe feed of the solution every 2-3 hours. In the evening, he came out of the cage as normal. Playful. Jumped on my bed. ( He loves to be on bed, as theres 46 degrees temprature here and bedroom always has AC on). So, I fed him hay, only hay, as told by vet.

HE ATE HAY.
EXACTLY AFTER 2-3 MINUTES HE POOPED. AND THE POOP WAS NORMAL HEALTHY POOP.
NOW I GAVE HIM MORE HAY TO CHECK.
SAME THING! SOMETHING LIKE THIS IS HAPPENING- Hay in the mouth, poop out of butt, at a gap of 2-3 minutes.
I gave him some bread. Same thing.
Then I called a friend of mine, who is doing veternary course. He told me to get for him any light anti-biotic tablet that cures loose motions, and dissolve it in water and syringe feed again. I did the same. Now, I left him in cage for 30-40 minutes to rest in cage. Then after 30-40 minutes, I opened him, he is again back on bed. I give him hay, he eats it and Poops after 2-3 minutes.
SO THE MAIN ISSUE IS :
.
.
.
.
AS HE EATS SOMETHING, HE POOPS OUT VERY SOON.

WHAT SHOULD I DO? ITS midnight here, so hes now sleeping in his cage. I will bring him to Air conditioned room tomorrow onwards.
Please tell me if he will be fine by tomorrow morning?

Rabbits often eat and poo at the same time, it doesn't mean he is pooping out what he has just eaten, it means that his gut is moving and the poos are coming out.

The bigger concern would be the diarrhoea and the cause for it, to be honest. However, good poos is good. However, it may be his caecotrophs (the poos he is supposed to eat), that could be what appears to be diarrhoea.

Does your bunny have hay available all the time? So he can eat it at any time?

Is what he is pooping out now normal and healthy or is it still runny? and Im not sure what youre friend meant by an antibiotic for loose motions? what was it called?

I wouldn't give him any tablets that haven't been prescribed by a vet who has examined him, they could do more harm than good.

I was about to ask whether this the rabbit who had babies, but I see you are calling him 'he'!
