Good places for neutering

Hi all,
I've got these 4 bunnies who are hopefully going to a new home soon, once we can find one! They are such stunning bunnies, but because they are cross-bred, I don't think breeders will want them. I would definitely like to get them neutered so they can possibly go together or at least live with one another for a while (as we have cages all around the garden because they fight) and I would make it a lot easier. The problem is, I don't think I want to spend all this money on them if they are going to new homes soon. Does anyone know where I could get them neutered free or cheaper but still safely?

It might help if you said where you lived... but there are no charities which do discounts for rabbits as far as I am aware in the uk. you just need to ring round your local vets. prices vary between £40- £120  madness but there you are.

If you are on certain benefits and within a catchment area the PDSA may be able to help with neutering costs.

if in west mids friends of the animals are a charity which help nuetering bills you buy vouchers off them to use at certain vets:thumb:

Oh sorry, I'm in south Devon. I have checked with my vets, and they said it is about £40 per rabbit! I think it's a bit much for me to spend, but I will keep searching. :thumb:

Oh I wish I was! My cousins are though, so maybe I could take the buns with me next time I go. Do you know which vets the vouchers are useable in? Or are they only ok to use in the west midlands?

If these are rabbits you bred yourself then it is your responsibility to rehome them neutered/spayed anyway, so it's a factor that should have been taken into account when breeding, so really however much it is, you should be paying anyway.

If you neutered them and bonded them all then it wouldn't be fair to separate them after, it would be like having to leave the love of your life to go and live on your own or with another person (or rabbit). And giving them to breeders will just cause more to be dumped on over filled rescues, it's inevitable.

£40 is quite cheap tbh, at my vets it's £33 for neuter and £52 for spay, but it varies a lot. And £40 for all rabbits, so around £160 is actually good because I know some people pay over £100 for a single spay.

I do agree with too but couldn't find a tactful way to word it. I think you will also struggle to find good homes for them, there are already so many in rescues looking for suitable homes.

I totally agree with this, I wasn't even meant to be keeping these bunnies anyway. My friend wanted to breed, she had the boy, I had the girl. I said I didn't mind if she took the majority of the rabbits after they were ready to go. 2 weeks after we had mated them, they suddenly said they didn't want even one of them and went and bought a pet shop rabbit! Completely unbelievable! I tried to find homes for them, but nobody was interested in rabbits at the time! I have kept them for this long because they had been with all their family for so long that I thought it would be cruel to send them away to live on their own (because they aren't neutered) and if they are neutered, I would be happy to sell them to live with another bunny, but I am not in the financial situation to be spending all this money on the rabbits that I wasn't supposed to even have. I asked my friend if she could half the vets bill for the neuter, but she said it's not her job, even though I am paying for food and accomodation anyway! It was her idea in the first place! Anyway, I completely understand what you are saying and I don't want to anger anyone about this :thumb:

The PDSA class it as preventative and charge around £55 for a neuter. The only benefits they accept is housing or council tax. Come to think of it though, the RSPCA do sometimes give vouchers to people in financial difficulties, I know someone who had a £25 voucher towards a neuter.

Personally, I think you should suck it up and pay! You and your friend chose to breed and there are consequences.

Re finding a vet; you could always do some phoning around and ask them if they know anyone who specialises in or has a lot of experience with rabbits.

Well I said I would only keep two babies and she would have the rest, so I don't think I am the one to pay this money, they are still half hers! And some of us can't go and spend £160 on rabbits that shouldn't even be in our homes! I have provided them lovely accommodation, food, treats, fresh hay and water, toys, but all of this for rabbits that shouldn't have even been mine? Its just like a charity with no donations! :(

It is unfortunate that your friend has left you in this position. Sadly people think breeding 'just one litter' is harmless but there is often something that goes wrong.

Could you get them done one at a time. One a month for instance.

If I where you I would say to this friend (maybe in writing) That your original agreement was for you to keep two rabbits. You feel that she either needs to pay for their upkeep, or take responsibility to rehome them. If she is not prepared to do this and is going to leave you with all the cost despite it being her idea and the male rabbit being hers then that is not how you would expect a friend to act. Friends don't drop each other in it. You are now at the point where you want to know if she is actually your friend or not.

If that doesn't get her to step up then she's not your friend.

As for the bunnies, how old are they? what sexes are they? you could potentially bond a group and have them all living in one set up. If you can't afford their vet treatment then maybe you will have to approach some rescues and make a donation along with them. It is a very hard process to rehome rabbits though and near impossible when you actually are making sure they go to a good knowledgeable home. Bonded bunnies don't need as much time and interaction as they have each other for play and company. I just love to sit and watch mine interact with each other even more than I enjoy playing with them.

She has put me and the bunnies in such a bad situation. I have already asked her many times to try and even pay a vets bill (one was £125 for a stitch to the skin under the eye!) and all she has given me is a bag of food. She is such a lovely person when we aren't talking about the rabbits, but it's just gotten too much now. The bunnies are around 1 year old. I still have the mum living with her 2 sisters and 5 babies and that is manageable and I chose to keep them. But to have to feed 4 extra boys it's very hard and we have so many cages just to keep them all separate to prevent fighting. I was thinking about getting them done on separate months, but I was just checking on the forum if there were any places that would castrate them for a cheaper price. I don't know whether to get them done while they are with me, because if someone buys one they might get them neutered themselves. I just don't know what to with them at the moment! :(

I don't think you should be selling these bunnies but finding a proper forever home for them. How many rabbits do you have? :?

I think £40 per bunny is an amazing price and I very much doubt that you will find anywhere cheaper than that. I think if you have decided to breed these bunnies then you need to take the responsibility to get them neutered and rehomed. Why did you breed them in the first place?

I have 12 rabbits, 8 of them are MINE and the other 4 are meant to be my friend's. I'm not sure if you have read the thread, but as I have said, I wasn't meant to be keeping these 4 rabbits, but I thought it would b cruel to send them to live on their own after having a happy year with their family. My friend promised she would keep them (she had the boy) but then she said she didn't want even one so I was lumbered with 25 rabbits. I managed to find homes for 8 but nobody else would take the rest so that is how it has been left

Sad thing is though, the female DID belong to you and you COULD have refused the mating, but you didn't. That now makes it your responsibility. YOu are far more likely to find GOOD homes for your buns if they are neutered. Yes you will lose money, but that is a given when breeding animals I'm afraid. If breeding is done responsibly and caringly there is no profit. The fact your friend refuses to help is sad and selfish, but it has happened.
Have you anything you could sell to raise the funds?
Most vets will discount if you are going to be having more than one animal done at the same time.
How old are the babes?
If still young enough to not be fighting, I will rehome 2 from you. You have one neutered and I will pay for the other.
HOw will you get the females (mum et all) spayed? You need to start thinking about that also as uterine cancer becomes more of a risk the older they get:?

As for a charity with no donations.....
A charity would not breed their animals. What would you have done if your doe hand needed a C section? you would have had to find the money then?
