Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cancers and Genetics

Jack's-Jane

Wise Old Thumper
Does anyone have any information about any research into Cancer in Rabbits which could have a genetic link ?

Somehow I doubt there are any published papers on the subject, but thought I'd ask anyway.

sorry - no - in all the searches I have recently done on rabbit cancer I have not come up with anything - although for obvious reasons my searches have been concentrated on melanomas and I was not actually looking specifically for genetics (as Parsley was a stray and crossbreed).

PS It seems unlikely given that you described it as a 'lump/tumour', but should it turn out that Morse's cancer is a malignant melanoma then you may want to keep in touch as Parsley has his first canine melanoma vaccine injection on this Monday coming.

I can understand the question Jane and it would be interesting to know if there was a predisposition in certain breed types but I suppose there is also the possibility of clusters of disease as there are in humans, simply by coincidence in the absence of any known cause?

I am so glad to see that Morse is doing so well post-op xx
