Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi I have a mini rex who got a nasty scratch in his ear and saw the vet on sunday and was given a painkilling injection and five days of antibiotics, an abcess burst today that was as far as i can make out hidden by being the same size as the origional swelling ,with one days worth of antibiotics left to go tommorow, he is booked into the vets in the morning as im wondering if he needs more antibiotics , he is his usual self but I just wondered if any other members had had this happen to their rabbits and if its common.? Any replies appreciated.x

It could be that the bacteria causing the abcess isn't susceptible to the antibiotic, different antibiotics are good for different things and if you don't know what caused the scratch they have probably just given you a broad spectrum antibiotic which is a "kills most things" antibiotic but there might be something that is better against whatever bacteria it is. Going back to the vets is the right thing to do. It may be worth getting them to take a swab if there is still puss there and do some cultures to find out what bacteria it is, or they might try just giving a different antbiotic or a longer course of what you had already at a higher dose.

I had an issue with tonsilitis once where it came back whilst I was still on the antibiotic, a different antiobiotic cleared it up.

hi, thanks for your reply, we are back from the vets after she removed the scab, bathed it and such and he is home with more antibiotics with instructions not to let a scab form again, all fine but i hope all this doesnt make him shy.

Usually abscesses do need different antibiotics to Baytril. If it is just a small abscess then keeping the scab off, squeezing out the pus and cleaning it out with dilute iodine or hibiscrub should help. If you cant get rid of it then I would suggest different abx and also Manuka Honey with a high UMF value.
