  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Wise Old Thumper
I noticed Thumper, our 6 year old silver fox, had lost a lot of weight recently. I took him into the vet this evening and he has gone from 2.4kgs in April to 1.8kgs today. I 'think' the loss has been recent and hoped it was dental, at least then it would be easyish to deal with.
The vet cannot really find anything obvious and he is eating like a horse but seems weak. Anyway he is in for bloods and x-rays tomorrow and I really hope we find out what is going on.
He lives with another rabbit so it's hard to say if anything is different- water consumption seems the same, no abnormal dropping and he's eating well.
I'm worried sick as so many of the sanctuary pets are becoming elderly and things like organ failure and cancers are appearing more and more in my loved ones.

Looks like kidney issues for thumper, suspected e.c. He will come home tonight and get supportive nursing with sub-cut fluids, panacur ( fir him and Milly) and possibly antibiotics in case it is a kidney infection.
