Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

U/D thank goodness lapizole is tasty!

I've had my suspicions recently and have now found some poos with what looks like teeny worms on them.
So, as far as I know it is panacur (sp?) that I need?

Finx seems to have lost weight recently, she is moulting like crazy so I wasn't sure if it was because her coat is much thinner. Tango is still a tubby thing but he lives with her, so if one of them has worms then surely the other does too?

Also, is panacur a tablet/liquid medication?

Yep I believe Panacur is the one most commonly used to worm rabbits. There's another one too which I don't remember the name of, but from what I've heard it's not as good.

I think it's a paste but I'm not completely sure.

Vetty McVet Vet time. Don't treat yourself with a wormer unless you have confirmation from a vet

Funnily enough I've just found pinworms in Daysys poo a few minutes ago. Mum has rung the vets and they've recommended Laprizole (sp?) for our 3, is this what you were thinking of?

Ok, vet means BIG stress for Tango, do you think it would be safe to take the worms themselves to the vet instead, so be identified by their lab? If they need to go then they need to go and of course I will take them.

What do you think?

It is suppossedly quite uncommon for a rabbit to have worms, but Ra did five years ago.

A straight forw\rd course of 10% Panacur, dosed at 0.2ml per kg weight, or you can use the paste for rabbits which is in a graduated syringe.

Panacur is a fairly innocuous substance, so I would start treatment asap for 10-14 days.

If you're worried phone your vet for confirmation, but you Panacur is not a POM and can be bought freely.

My vet (specialist Ian Sayers) Says worms arent common in bunnies...and panacur can be bought from Pets (cough) at home (splutter)....

Thanks all. I had heard that they were uncommon in rabbits, but I have put the sample in a freezer bag and it looks almost identical to this:

I have called the vets, the receptionist said that someone will call me back after 6, so hopefully soon.

Am I right in thinking that rabbits usually don't mind the taste of panacur? I have had to syringe feed Finx before and she hated it, and Tango has only just started to trust me...

That is exactly what my vets have just recommended. Apparently it is a liquid that needs syringing but it tastes nice.... I really hope so.
I can't think of anything absorbent that rabbits are allowed to eat that I might use to make it easier to administer.

ETA: this is it... http://www.vetuk.co.uk/rabbit-suppl..._651/lapizole-100ml-wormer-for-rabbits-p-3078
Hopefully it is as tasty as it sounds!

Lazipole tasts like Aniseed apparently, my rabbits LOVE it and take it easily, are you gonna try syringing or would you rather not? if not, apple maybe?

Ah yes, maybe... I will try if they seem open to it without too much stress... but Finx wouldn't come near me by the time her meds were finished last time (I wonder if she will remember?) and I've been slooooowly gaining Tango's trust since I rescued him last autumn so I really don't want to go back to square one!

Update

I soaked their individual doses into a couple of pellets in a tiny ceramic bowl and gave it to them like that. Mopped up the bits that didn't get soaked up for each bun with a dandelion leaf and they gobbled those up too :thumb:
So have both successfully had day one's dose, I'm so relieved I didn't have to syringe feed it. The most stressful bit was catching Tango to weigh him - he turned out to be exactly the same as he was last time at the vet's anyway

When I had to give Angel lapizole before she hated the syringe, after two times giving it to her this way she actually backed away from me if she saw me with a syringe :(
So I got some dill and dripped the lapizole onto that and it soaks it up pretty well.
Angel ate it no problem :)

This is what I was worried about, I had to syringe feed Finx when she went into stasis after her spay and it was AWFUL. Why can't all medicine taste good?

How long do you have to do it for? My course is 28 days, and Alfie loathes medicine (he'd been on it for 3 months since he was 5 weeks old bless him:() I feel so awful giving them it! Thankfully they'll take it themselves, it's just getting the dropper in their mouth that's difficult

 Angel doesn't care how good the medicine tastes. She point blank refuses, actually holds her breath!
I'm going to try get her to accept the syringe gradually by putting pineapple juice into it and letting it drip into her mouth.
I've already done this with Parsley and he loves the syringe.
So hopefully if he needs meds in the future it'll be easy to give to him :)

Yeah 28 days here too. They are happily eating their own portions of medicine soaked pellets so far. 4 weeks is a long time, it's less stressful this way!
