  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Easy ways to administer Baytril.

Took Lee to be castrated today but they couldn't do him as he has a lot of pus around his willy. Any ideas what that might be? They said possibly an infection. So he's on Baytril for a week. Any easy ways to get it into him please?

I put it on a basil leaf roll it up and wrap another one around it violet just snatches it out mi hand :)

Baytril's pretty foul-tasting  so it's one of the harder ones to 'get down them' I find.

Is he very food-motivated? Alfie usually readily scoffs it down if I hide the dose in a basil leaf and wrap it up, or add it to a tiny amount of veg or fruit baby food. I've also had some success with making a teeny tiny bite-sized baytril sandwich - putting the dose between 2 pieces of wholemeal bread. Bubbles seems to be able to smell drugged food though :lol: so I just have to bite the bullet and syringe her.

I hollowed out a grape (took a bit of practise lol) then put the meds inside. I only had to medicate once a day but if you need to dose several times a day you'd be better off trying the basil leaf option as Wendle said as the fruit is very sugary :)
