  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Posted on behalf of Becki who can't get to her computer right now (for reasons you will see).

I need advice on what to do for Rhia. There is something underlyingbut Im going to the vets in ten minutes & they will suggest pts. Sheisnt eating, lifeless, her breathing was bad but has calmed down alittle, she has passed some normal poos, teeth are fine, shes inhorrendous abdominal pain - no mass, there are gut sounds. Went athalf eleven last night, She had gut stimulant, pain relief & IVfluids. She still wont eat, I cannot syringe her - It is physicallyimpossible & when I try she takes little breaths like she is going tostop breathing. What can i do? What can I ask the vets to do?

Please help.

Have they done diagnostics? X-rays? Bloods? ultra sound scan? She sounds very much like my Autumn when he has acute pain episodes but the cause may be different. Autumn is loaded up on a drip and then put on vetergesic. They do now syringe feed but only knowing what the cause is, they didn't before (incase it exaccerbated a problem), just kept him hydrated and tempted him with food.

If they choose not to PTS then diagnostics are vital.

If they suggest put to sleep is there a possibility of a referral to a specialist? I'm not sure which vet she uses, so maybe it's already a specialist. I can't remember for sure, is Becki in the Manchester area?

Esme has a horrendous episode with pain then fast breathing etc which was "just" belly ache so maybe it's possible Rhia does just need more of what she had last night, though I know Rhia does have underlying health issues.

I would suggest you resist pts unless her pain is uncontrollable
more pain killer and more iv fluids..keep her warm and quiet
Good luck

I've no advice I'm afraid but didn't want to read and run. (((((((((((((Megavibes))))))))))))) for Rhia, I hope something can be done to help her.

Hopefully you get to see a specialist. I ended up going to see one with Doughnut after I saw the vet and he was unsure and referred me on. She had lots of tests and I felt so re-assured as the specialist was so knowledgeable. My vets are really good but for anything serious I would always go to the specialist.

Good luck. Sorry I can't be of more help.

thisd is just a guess as i have no idea but has she been in contact with any poisonous substance that could cause this?

Sorry about the garbled message that I'd asked Sammi to post, I was up all last night with her & was sat in work typing out before I dashed off to the vets. They admitted her with the promise that I could take over nursing her once I finished work, She had repeat abdominal Xrays & they put her on a drip. She is brighter in herself, marginally, but she will not eat. She has no interest - all shes doing is sleeping. The pain has eased in her abdoman (Whereas last night in was excruciating for her) and I have more gut stimulant & pain relief to inject overnight. :(

I'm glad she is feeling more comfortable now. I hope she feels wll enough to start eating soon. Do the vets know what the problem is yet? xx

I suspect the reason she wants to sleep will be the opiate pain relief - did they give her vetergesic? Poppy was like this a few days ago. You kind of need to let them rest but also wake them up every few hours and encourage them to eat. Has she had some fluids since you have taken her home?
