  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

when should baytril start working?

Vets always start with Baytil as its the only abx licenced for bunnies, but it isn't the most effective drug.

Personally I refuse Baytril in favour of other abx, but if I didn't see some improvement in the first 3-5 days I'd go back for something different.

Is bun on anything else besides baytril?

nope just that but today his nose looked worse:( he's still eating and everything.he sounds really snuffly and loud. i can feel the snot rattling in his nose when i touch it! he's had two doses so far in banana. i couldnt get it in his mouth otherwise lol

If he's not improving then I would go back to the vets to try an alternative. Bisolvin powder is also useful as it helps thin the mucus down a bit - just a pinch in a few mls of water really helps.

My rabbit was put onto Baytril and I saw no improvement. Vet said to try longer. Weeks later still no change he was put on Septrin. Within 7 days we saw a noticeable difference.

Tip: to help unblock his suffly nose and break down mucus put him in a steamy bathroom after you've run a hot shower. Just for a couple of minutes, no longer as he/she might get too hot but I have found that doing this once a day has kept Vincent's nose clear so far :thumb:
