Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Environment Issues with my rabbits?

Hi Everyone,

I have posted on here a couple of times as my 14 week old bunnies have been having seizures. We've taken them to the vets, they have had blood tests for E Coniculi and Toxoplasmosis but both tests have come back as negative. I have posted the video below of one of them having a fit, about 30 seconds in you can see the seizure activity. They are both doing this.

They are currently on medication, Metacam and Baytril which we have to syringe orally twice a day. The vets had them in there for a 5-6 days last week to inject them with treatment for toxoplasmosis before the results came back but they did seem to improve. When we got them back last week, they were more active and they hardly had seizures anymore, they hadn't stopped but were definitely having less. Now it's been nearly a week since we have got them back and they seem to be fitting more again... i'm wondering whether it could be something environmental. Also, they are sisters and there are another 4 from the same litter and they are all fine. I'm leaning more away from neurological condition and environmental.

We have no idea what it could be at all. They are in a 2 tier hutch/run, over 6ft so lots of space, they have hay as bedding, normal water bottle, premium muesli food. They do have access to the grass in their run but that has never been treated with anything.

We painted the fence over two years ago so I don't think it could be that but does anyone have any other suggestions, seeing them fit and squeal is heartbreaking!

If we can't figure anything out then we will have to give back to previous owner as they were obviously ok there... :(

Aww sorry i can't help someone with more knowledge may come along soon and help I hope they get better soon :(

Hi, has the vet recommended checking them for brain problems?

I know this isn't exactly the same but my hamster had a brain tumour and was having seizures where would just start at stuff then suddenly come back into reality.
Also my grandparents dog kept on having seizures and they found out she had something wrong with her brain.

Maybe if possible and if funds allow maybe suggest to your vet to try all avenues.
I've not seen it in rabbits myself but watching your video was very similar to how my old girl reacted with hers.

Really hope you get the sorted and they get better.

How very distressing for you and them :(

I have no idea what could be causing it, but hopefully you will be able to get to the bottom of it with your vets help.

How very frustrating and confusing for you. To be honest I would be very surprised if it was environmental, if it carried on while they stayed in the fairly sterile veterinary environment for several days then that suggests to me that it is something going on within the bunnies. I would have thought that fitting related to an environmental issue would resolve almost immediately once the trigger is removed. It may just be jolly bad coincidence that you have the two from the six who are doing this, or it may of course be that others are doing it too and it's just that you're the most observant owner so you're the only one who has noticed.

It might be worth discussing with your vet a referral to a specialist to see if they have other thoughts, they may well have more experience of this sort of thing and be able to offer more alternatives for diagnosis and treatment.

Good luck x x
