  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hayfever - anyone tried this???

I've just found this on the internet and thought I'd share with you. Is this true, if so, has anyone tried it? Poor Pixie's eyes are bad again and I'm now wondering if it's a type of hayfever at all - just grabbing at straws really as desperate to get her better, poor darling has been through so much this year. Let me know what you all think....

Allergies (hay fever) in rabbits are truly rare. Since it only seems to affect her at certain times of the year she very well could have hay fever. The only thing you should really give rabbits for allergies is childrens grape flavored benadryl. I am not allowed to give out doses because I am not a veterinarian. However if you call your vet that you have a pre-established relationship she should be able to tell you the correct doses to give to your rabbit since she already knows their weights, pre-existing conditions etc.

If the benadryl doesn't help you have to consider that it may not be allergies at all. I do know that benadryl can be given to rabbits for long term treatment of allergies with little long term affects on their health.

The site where I got this from is...

She's been great since I started giving her both but the Piriton was given on the vets advice and the amount I have to give her :)

Please don't give Benadryl, the formulation in the US (where that website is based) is different to the UK, it has a totally different active ingredient and one that anecdotally at least is not safe for bunnies. Piriton children's syrup is bunny safe (and tasty if Santa was anything to go by), the dosage of the active ingredient is in the fhb textbook of bunny medicine.
