Sorry to keep going on about peppers poorly ear and abscess .
But i was just wondering if anyone had ever had this done on a bunny ? & how the bunny was afterwards ? & was the surgery a success, did the abscess ever reoccur ?

Does anyone know of any non surgical that may help her ?

Bunnylover177 has had something very similar done on her lops due to ear abscesses, I don't know how often she comes on here so it might be worth dropping her a pm (and do a search for her previous posts as she has mentioned it on here in the past).

Good luck with your little one xx

Feel free to ask any details once you've checked my original post. It was a pretty gruelling operation (for us and the bunnies) but I think worth it as it clearly relieved so much pain and discomfort. The abscesses can't return due to the way the operation is done. Wish I could say everything has been perfect since but unfortunately one of them has an ear infection I am treating him for. I can get medication into his ear fairly easily due to the operation and so far it seems to have worked. I am using flamazine which is normally used to treat bird ear problems - kills lots of different bugs according to my vet!

Two of my bunnies had it done after persistant ear abscesses. Unfortunately one died shortly after the op due to her age and general health I think. However, my other bunny did really well after it. He did however die after three months due to unrelated cancer, so I don't know what the long term prognosis would have been.

lateral wall resection

Hi

One of our bunnies has just had this surgery. We tried different things at her vets but after taking xray she was referred to vet specialist ( harcourt brown vets harrogate) she is at this moment munching merrily.

I took her 2 wks as tmro. She had the surgery on the wed afternoon. The infection ( and she had abscess ) went well, but due to the infection she was at the vets until saturday just gone.

She looks a bit strange - as she has blue dye and shaved ear. Her stiches have been removed and we need to put genticin drops on the suture/stiches and in the tiny hole left.

Tomorrow I can bathe the rest of her ear and remove the tiny bits of blood.

Had she not had this surgery then not only her quality of life would have been awful she would have been miserable and not eating well/in pain.

Three years ago (she has since died) our other bunny had the same surgery at the same vets. She was only there for 4 days and after having 5 day course of streptocare , tramadol and metacam she was happy and full of life AND pain free. Should our other bunny (leo) need surgery for abscess /ear infections I would not hesitate .

I was told that surgery was the only option as I would have been unable to clear the infection completely or treat the abscess.

I would have a word with your vet for a referral. Or you can actually ring the vets as self referral if your vet is not (in your view) giving the best treatment to your bunny.

Please feel free to email or pm should u need further info n.

Hi

Thanks for all the replies, so good to hear that your bunnies done well with the op !
sorry to hear about your bunnies going to the bridge lurchergirl :( binky free little ones  x

i was assuming that pepper had got this purely because she was a lop ? as she has never had an ear infection ! its just this big horrible abscess.
Shes on metacam just now & fibreplex as we are trying some penicillin g injections, have been told these probably wont work & surgery is the way to go although her prognosis even with surgery is poor as it could rupture into her brain :(

Glad to hear your buns doing well & munching away happily marvy :D !

Its just horrible when there ill , I feel so useless atm...

lateral wall ...

I know! You feel so helpless don't you. Each case is different I would imagine . We found the metacam a godsend in the respect that both jims and rosie were comfortable until surgery.

The vet (s) have said that lops are prone to infection due to the fact they are lops.

I am sure you will make the decision that best suits your little furry one.

( Jims is doing really well. She is soooo happy not to have to have her ear flushed/cleaned daily anymore. The aftercare is really easy to manage when comparing to the care prior to her op.)

Please let me know how you and your little one get on.

My vet has just referred me to a specialist as he thinks that my lop will need to have this surgery. I was starting to give up hope as have only seen lots of posts about how scary and invasive this is, and that some rabbits didn't make it. I am pleased to hear some positive stories.

Thank you
