Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Advice for Smoo - stomach wound like she was spayed

Jenova

Sorry the title is a bit rubbish.

She had the lump removed from her stomach on Tuesday. It was pretty nasty and her whole stomach has been shaved and she has stitches all the way up like she's been spayed. I've never had a rabbit spayed or have these sort of stitches before so I'm just after some advice. She has the run on my room but it's all on one level. I really need to put them outside so I can let out the chinchillas and clean them out but I don't know how long to leave it. I was supposed to be doing the chinnies when I found the lump on Sunday! Outside is dirty and there are lots of levels for them to jump around. How long would you leave it before she goes out?

I'm thinking two weeks to fully heal but then the chinnies are cooped up and stinky. I might lock the rabbit in the dog crate for half an hour to let them heave a run and clean them, but then I'd be worried about biting noses through the bars...

Could you put a duvet cover or blanket over the crate to stop them seeing each other.

I would leave it at least a week before putting them outside. How is she in herself?

Good idea!

She's perfect in herself. Eating, running around, you couldn't tell she'd had an op apart from her poos.

She looked like she was trying to get to the stitches last night, I think she might be a little to large to get to them  but I gave her a little more painkillers just in case she was in pain. It might be habit from when the lump was there. I think she used to clean it (maybe bite it). It was probably in the way of her getting to her cecals when I think about it.

I am so glad she is ok in herself, I agree that keeping her pain meds topped up is the best way to stop her annoying her stitches. Hopefully she will get used to it being away soon.

Could you put her in a pet carrier in another room wwhile you sort the chins out? i hope she will bbbe ok soon.
