  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

extremely matted fur

Is it painful for rabbits? I mean matting that is actually stuck to the buns skin? Also how do you remove it? Thanks

It isn't good. Can rub their skin and I imagine it gets really hot as they can't moult properly.

It depends on how matted bunny is. Gently teasing the matts out with your fingers and the help of a metal comb, but careful not to pull their skin too much as its sensitive.

If its very bad, maybe visit a vet who will be able to clip the hair. Then keep on top of it when it re grows

Matted fur on any animal can/is extremely painful, it tugs and pulls on the skin and sometimes you will find sores underneath.

You can clip out matts but that could be stressful to the bun, if you can be sure bun will sit still or have an extra pain of hands to help you could try small manicure scissors?

If all else fails, maybe best to visit the vets.

Thanks for the replies, i am going to try using a manicure scissors tonight and cut out what i can then will take him to the vet this week.. If the vet shaves the matted areas wont the bun be cold outside or am i being stupid lol ?
