PetsatHome VIP Rabbit in "Adoption" centre

honeybunny

Wise Old Thumper
our local PAH had a sign up yesterday in their "adoption" centre

" Young VIP rabbit looking for a home. She has sneezing and snuffles probably due to an allergy so must be kept dust free"

all I can add is :cry:

:evil::evil::evil::evil: my friend messaged me to say that they had a 8 week old vip baby in their too that looked so tiny.. I take it our P@H is one of the ones selling the VIP buns ....

spoke to the assistant..well I said " I doubt it's an allergy probably more down to stress from her long journey"

the reply.." oh..well she's out the back.."( very dust free in the stock room:censored:)

"no I meant her journey to get to your store"

" oh..well the trial is ending soon"

obviously knew what I meant without me saying much:cry: Glad they have acted on the complaints are are not continuing with this..just wonder how many little creatures are ill as a result of it all

words just escape me they really do

******* shop!! I bet my vet would love to give them what for...........despicable place.

well as a company they are not going to disappear and some of the advice they give out is good..and most of the products they sell are of good quality
but if PAH are reading this

please stop selling rabbits completely..just advertise real rescue animals from local rescues who do it properly

Our local store opened in Nov '11 first bun handed to us that had been bought from there and people couldn't keep..early Jan '12..and it's kept going
only yesterday a male was handed into us who had been bought from that store

so stop selling them..then you'll have the support of proper rescues all over the country

:thumb: yep, they seem to do well on sales of cat and dog stuff swithut selling puppies and kittens, so selling the animals to accompany the products can't be an essential element of success.

Poor little VIP bunny, I do hope that s/he ends up with someone who knows how to care for him/her with any ongoing problems, I have an awful feeling that the poor thing might be waiting a long time for "adoption" with that illness, though :( it also makes me mad how the adoption section is being - in my opinion - misused in this manner. As far as I'm concerned, unsold stock does not seem to constitute a rescue rabbit in need of adoption to a new home.

poor little souls :( It's just as well I don't have a large house and lots of money or I would probably go to every store and take them all home ( which would not help the situation one bit I know ) I just can't bare to think of such an innocent creature having to go through so much in his/her young life :( and what health problems are they going to face? it's just too sad:(

So if someone were to adopt that rabbit would Pets at Home pay for the vet fees? Bunny obviously has snuffles which might be a life long thing. I wonder if they would be prepared to do that. I mean they're obviously not taking the rabbit to the vets themselves, which means the infection is only going to get worse and harder to get rid of. :(

I don't know if this is true or not but this is really worrying if it is. I am going to email pets at home and ask them.

Dear Miss ***

Many thanks for your email.

In relation to our VIP rabbits, they come from a breeder on the continent, their facilities have been inspected by our Pets at home Head of Pets, who herself is an experienced Veterinary Surgeon. The rabbits are neutered, microchipped and vaccinated against Myxomatosis and VHD, however we recommend topping up the VHD vaccine at 12 weeks of age. They are 8 weeks old when we first offer them for sale. The new Nobivac Myxo-RHD Vaccine was only launched last week so at the moment is not being used on these rabbits.

As a business we are paying additional costs to carry out the trial to understand how we can replicate the process in the UK, the VIP rabbits are transport by air to minimise the length of time travelling. Any pets that are imported into the UK are done so adhering to strict importation regulations specified by DEFRA and the EU. This is a small trial which includes a maximum of 16 stores at any one time out of 314 stores, for example we only received 26 neutered rabbits into our stores as part of the trial last week.

Our focus is to establish if there is a market in the UK for rabbits that have been vaccinated and/or neutered, this will offer welfare benefits for the rabbits, reduced risk of unwanted pregnancies as well as a substantial saving for customers on having to pay for vaccinations and neutering at a later date. Being able to neuter, vaccinate and microchip the animals before they arrive in our stores, is key to helping us promote responsible pet ownership and ensuring that the animals in our care go on to live happy, healthy lives. We know that many people do not neuter or vaccinate their rabbits and are keen to try different ways of encouraging this.

We know from the rabbit welfare groups that rabbits are social and a male and female pair is the best pairing. We cannot recommend this as we sell rabbits at 8-10 weeks old and customers would end up with a lot of unwanted babies, the last thing we want. The only way we can find to enable this is by selling them neutered at a young age.

One of the key reasons for doing this is that this supplier has established breeding, weaning practices and takes a great deal of pride in the pets they breed. Their vet is highly trained and experienced in all aspects of animal care, but is a specialist in rabbits. He performs neutering procedures via surgery on rabbits at 4 – 5 weeks of age whilst this is younger than in the UK, the vet is very experienced at this and recovery time is short for these rabbits. It is our aim if the trial is successful to look for highly trained vets in this country with additional training who would be able to complete the neutering method so that we can reproduce the process in the UK, our Head of Pets will be investigating this possibility.

I would like to assure you that the wellbeing of our rabbits is vital and we do not undertake any trial such as this without due consideration to animal welfare.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any further queries.

Kind Regards,

Emily

^^^ as Jill said above

If they didnt sell live animals I think I would probably by products from them - if they were the products I needed

I have just emailed pets at home asking where they get the bunnies from and how old they are when they are neutuered so will let you know when I get a reply

thanks Jayne, wow thats a long thread over 100 pages!!!

I am beginning to think that I should just avoid P@H altogether, they don't seem to be doing their best to provide safe, secure, loving homes for their 'stock' :( poor little rabbit.

I no longer step foot in P@H.....

Mainly due to the debacle when I adopted Molly from the adoption centre (I know, I know, but I don't regret it one bit - I needed a piggy desperately as Marley had been seperated from his brother and no rescues had any single girls in, I still maintain she is the best £5 I ever spent ) and the guy didn't know a scrap about her, then tried to pick her up with the scruff of her neck :(
