Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bladder sludge issues-is there a better painkiller than metacam?

Poor Milly still isn't right. I just don't feel the metacam covers her for anywhere near 24 hrs. She's on .6 a day and is a medium lop. Is there another painkiller than can be given at home that is better? We're going to the vets in an hour so will ask but would welcome anyone elses advice. I just feel she's still in pain, reluctant to eat anything hard (just had dental though so don't think it's teeth) and spends ages in her litter tray and then empties it out all over the floor. She didn't used to do this but now literally kicks all the litter and hay out and when it's on the carpet she'll kick it round the room. I keep gettimg bits in my eye!

There may be other options short term but metacam is the best option for long term use that I am aware of. I would ask the vet whether the dose could be increased or whether the vet thinks splitting the dose into 2 daily doses would be better xx

If she's in pain, from my experience of how we manage Artie, I would wonder if some sort of intervention to improve on her current situation would be needed. Artie is on daily metacam and has been for nearly 3 years for bladder sludge, it's given as an anti-inflammatory though, not a painkiller. When he's had pain episodes he's had various interventions. Does Milly have her bladder expressed at intervals to keep on top of the sludge problem?

when did she last have it all flushed out? and have they xrayed recently to check for an actual stone?

We used to use both ketamin (injected) for short term pain episodes (when a stone was fragmenting) and also diazapam (valium) to release the muscle tension.

However if there is a lot of pain then she should be being assessed to see whether she also has an nfection (common with sludge) or actual stones.

I would also suggest you check the calcium content of your local water and if it is high consider using the heap tescos bottled water which is low in calcium.
