Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Sudden loss of hind leg movement

Young Bun
Hope someone can help with this?

Our 8 year old female bunny suddenly starting to drag her hind legs on Thursday, still hopping but dragging a little, took her to the vet on Friday and he said he could feel a lump towards her back end - which he thinks could be a tumour which may be the cause of the leg weakness, he gave us Metacam and the drug to get her guts moving incase the lump was a blockage in her waste pipe.

On Saturday she went down hill with reference to her hind legs, now she can't hop at all, she's still eating well and we already have her on a dose of Panacur incase of EC, infact she was last treated with Panacur about 4 months ago. She doesn't seem to be pooping properly, although passing wet poos.

We are due to go back to the vets on Tuesday morning when I guess he will operate on the lump.

Anyone had anything like this before? We have had experience with hind leg weakness before with a bunny but that was gradual and caused by EC.

Does anyone think removing the tumour will help her legs, or are the 2 unrelated?

Where is the 'lump' ? In her abdomen ?

Did the Vet not consider doing any diagnostics such as an Xray ?

He said the lump was towards her back end, which is why he thinks it may be related to her legs he seemed pretty sure it may be a uterine cancer as she probably has not been spayed (she was a rescue bunny so we had no idea if she has been spayed or not).

Poor Bunny

Personally I would want diagnostics run before any surgical intervention. I would get her back to the Vet ASAP.

Just to agree with Jane's advice- I wouldn't want to operate on a bunny with a suspected uterine tumour without first having x-rays taken, of the spine/hips and particularly of the chest, to check whether the tumour has spread as if it has it would not be fair to put her through surgery. It may be that your vet is planning on doing x-rays first anyway though
