  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Urine scald - what is best to treat with?

DDD

Mama Doe
Since Desmond had a funny turn, possible EC, possible stroke etc last October, one of his legs hasn't 'hopped' as well as it should. He sits funny on this leg, and I have had to stop him going out in the wet as other wise he sits in the wet, instead of on it (hope this makes sense!!). He also seems to not be in so much control of his urine. Over the last week or so, his leg has got some fur missing around the side, which I can only assume is urine burn. It isn't red/ sore looking, just bald. He hasn't got sore hocks, the bottom of his feet are still lovely and fluffy.

He is due to go to the vets for VHD tomorrow, so I will show her. This wasn't a problem a week ago. Any ideas/ what is best to put on it? I am cleaning out the shed every day, and putting thick straw on the floor so if he is incontinent, it is soaking though the straw onto newspaper so he isn't hopping or sitting in wee. His brother Douglas is fine.

As it isn't red or inflamed I'd suggest cleaning him up, drying well and then putting on a layer of vaseline, which is what I was advised in the past.
