You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Searching for a good vet in the north east

Kwani

New Kit
Hiya guys,

I need to find a good bunny vet in the north east of England. I am willing to travel for the right vet as long as it is not like hours and hours of travel but even a 45 minute drive for a good vet is better then a 5 minute drive for a crappy one. My current vet seems to have NO IDEA what he is doing with the bunnies. I had him sex one of our bunnies and I had to tell him he was covering the organs with his fingers and not looking in the right place... Then he was pretty rough trying to find the testicles which have not dropped yet. I REALLY do not want them to neuter him and am hoping to find a vet I can feel comfortable with before it is time for that.

Thanks for everyones help.

Hi  I'm in the North East - Redcar, in fact. Well, Marske by the sea actually.

My vet is simply called Marske Vets and they're great; I'm very happy with them and they appear to know what they are doing. Their phone number is 01642 488777.

First vets in Forest Hall, Judith brown is excellent, i've also used vets4pets on heaton road? and they were pretty good. Do NOT use companion care in the PaH in Cramlington

I'm in Durham and use Hares and Hounds up in Gilesgate who are very good and very knowledgeable with rabbits. Feel like I learn something every time I go there!

Also used Abbey Vets in Neville's Cross (although there is a bigger one in chester-le-street) and they are pretty good too.

i live near whitby :D
theres 3 vets in the area
clevedale specialises in farm animals there ok
becks vets ive not been to yet apprently there very posh :?
wilton vets guisborough specialises in small animals very good vets :D

currently using Vets4Pets in Hartlepool but honestly the bunny is not getting any better and in fact his diarrhoeal has gotten so much worse... I am at my wits end. The pet store wants to take him back to get him healthy but if we separate him from the other male to do that not sure what our chances of getting them back together are. From everything I have read and been told the chances are super slim. I was going to have them both nuetered in 2 weeks but not sure that is even a good idea with one of them sick. Going to have to see what I can find out today.

Thanks everyone for the vet suggestions, I never got notification of the replies though so I must have failed at subscribing,

Vets 4 Pets in Hartlepool are useless! We had the same problem with one of our bunnies at the rescue and the owner switched vets to Vets 4 Pets in Sunderland, there is a good rabbit vet there called Honor Etherington. We took the bunny there and she was great but unfortunately it was a bad outcome for the bun. :(
I would search for a vet asap. Where abouts do you live?

I found the vets for pets in Middlesbrough great with Toby through his neuter, the vet there Catherine is lovely. I also have used oaklands in Highleven by Yarm and the Bridge Veterinary Group that a few people use in here and they were both good with neuters. In fact I know of about 8 male buns who've had neuters at bridge with no problem but they are a bit expensive.
Do you know what is causing the diarrhoea? What's his diet? I would change to feeding hay only for a few weeks to improve loose poo's? Diarrhoea is actually quite unusual in buns, is it actually liquid or just too soft? I don't think any good vet would perform a neuter on a bun that wasn't otherwise healthy because of the increased risk of death under anaesthetic.

DO NOT use Oaklands. I lost a bunny during a routine dental and nearly lost another because the vet there doesn't have a clue
They used to be very good when the vet, Chris, worked there but he left and was replaced by somebody who knows next to nothing about bunnies.

I use vets4pets Sunderland -Honor is very very rabbit savvy and very caring. I would highly recommend her. But make sure you ask for her if you make an appointment as there is another vet there who, although is lovely, isn't as knowledgeable about rabbits.

really, when did he leave? I've seen him and one of the female vets, I cant remember her name but as I often foster they've done over 20 spays for me without any problems what so ever, but as I don't have anywhere to keep buns inside I only neuter in the warmer months and haven't used them since september. They're a bit to far out to use for the day to day stuff. They have about 5 vets there though? One of the new vet nurses gave me the wrong pre op advise once and I complained about her- they were very apologetic and I think she was very upset when I told her (I said straight away) but that's seems to be something that happens quite frequently at a lot of vets simply because not that many rabbits go through their doors?

:wave:I use the Grange Vets in Norton, Ann the vet there is fab with rabbits and in fact all our pets so I can highly recommend. They are also open 7 days a week. Hope you get sorted soon:wave:

He left last year some time. I always requested to see him because he got Ellie through her illness a few years ago and has always done her and Fiver's dentals. Whenever I made an appointment since I only ever got the one vet and have only seen that one vet there, they may have more but I thought they only had one if I'm honest. She was Scottish? She did Ellie's dental and she never woke up  She'd had many done before and not had a problem so I put it down to an underlying health issue (she had suspected kidney problems) but she did Fiver a few months afterwards and he came home in awful condition. He was deathly cold and floppy and refusing to eat, they didn't give him painkillers but fortunately I had metacam already, I rang the vet 15 mins after I got home and she told me to give him only 0.2mls and said that was more than enough. I took him back the next day as he was still refusing to eat and I had been up all night with him trying to keep him warm and she just said he will be ok and gave him an injection of metacam but still was only 0.2mls. Talking to her I realised how little she knew about bunnies.
I changed vets and explained why to my new vets and when they checked his teeth 2 weeks after his dental they were shocked he'd even had a dental and told me it must have not been done correctly.
I never complained but I never went back to them. My uncle uses Oaklands for his dog and has had nothing but trouble regarding an operation he had and poor after op care etc. He is changing vets also. It seems since Chris left things have not been good as nobody has had problems with them before.
