The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Blistery burns from cone/collar

Dishydashy

New Kit
Hey I'm new to all this but had my bunny for about a year! He's just had the snip and been issued with a cone/collar...it's breaking my heart to see him like this, but I know it's for the best!
However the collar seems to be rubbing on his ears and some really sore burn like marks have appeared on them! Also the area where he was shaved seems to be really irritating :( I was wondering if anyone knew any creams or anything that I could use to help him until I can get a vets appointment on Wednesday :(

Thank you in advance

My dog had an irritation on her shaved area from a cone/collar and I asked the vet and she just suggested bathing it in warm water with a cotton ball not sure if it would be the same for a bunny

Rabbits aren't usually issued with a collar. They usually leave the stitches well alone providing they have enough post op pain killer. :) Rabbits need to eat their cecals and with a collar they can't reach, they also can't groom themselves.

He wasn't leaving his stitches alone that was the problem... He had a check up the morning after the op and by the time we got there he looked like a vampire bunny!!
I've given him a few hours a day without his collar on now (supervised) but every time you take his collar off he starts attacking his wound :( I just want to do what's best now for him

Sounds like he is very uncomfortable. I would let the vets know and request some pain relief.

the vet should offer pain relied such as meloxivet or metacam - this will stop him feeling pain and so will leave the stitches alone. I have had about 20 boy buns of all ages castrated and all had pain relief and none pulled their stitches. Cone collars are really bad for rabbits.

Poor bun must be feeling really uncomfortable with sore man bits and a sore neck.

I've never used cones for my buns or my cats after neuters as I think it stresses them out too much.

Could you go back to the vet tomorrow and get some pain relief for your bun?

Just to add cone collars aren't recommend for bunnies but one of my buns had a major operation and he HAD to leave the wound alone so they issued him with a collar. It drove him crazy at first but he had to have it on for around 4 weeks so soon became used to it.

Please make sure that he's eating his ceceals, as gross as it sounds we often had to make them into a sandwich with spinach leaves to get him to eat them. We also got a soft kitten collar as opposed to the standard bandage that vets tend to issue which seemed to ease his discomfort.

Hopefully you won't need this advice but thought I'd share just incase
