  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I need names of vets who might/do take referrals please- I'm in Suffolk

Richard Saunders at Bristol has been mentioned however I'm not sure that's feasible due to distance.

What other options are there?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if there's anyone closer but Parsnipbun's vet ?Marion? Ford is the closest I can think of (Cambridge).

If it doesn't need to be an 'in person' referral and we are talking orthopaedics, you won't get a better team than FHB and Nigel HB, though obviously if bunny needed to travel then they'd be over 3 hours away

I was going to say Mrs Ford!!

I think the surgery is called the Cambridge Veterinary group! (I drive past it every week and still am unsure as to whether im right when I say the name!)

Sorry I don't know where about your from, I'm guessing a bit too far down South for anywhere in Manchester. I know Ashleigh Vets, Manchester do and they are really good but not sure how good compared to the "elite" bunny vets.

Thanks guys.

I thought about parsnipbuns vet but not sure if this would be the right kind of case?

We're looking at a referral due to chronic and unidentifiable pain episodes that are increasing in intensity and frequency. We can't find any reason at all (bloods, x-rays, blood glucose, etc showing nothing out of the ordinary). Physical examination shows lowered body tempt and very tense/hunched.

If we're going to do this it has to be worthwhile so I have to get the best a possibly can and get it done with as minimal stress to him as possible. I think Manchester is further than Bristol, but thank you youth novels.

What is FHB's surgery called?

That's the address Sky-O

Lawton at Harold Hill, Essex takes referrals http://www.vets.uk.net/index.htm I accompanied someone to a referral there a few years back and he was very thorough, the consultation took about an hour (the next patient REALLY gave us a look of daggers when we came out!)

Sharon Redrobe is now at Nottingham (?) vet school teaching exotics, I don't know if they take referrals there?

South Beech in Essex also take referrals http://www.southbeechvet.co.uk/exotic_pets.html

I think William Lewis at Wylies does too: http://www.wylievets.com/ William is also quite good at just having a chat over the phone and giving vets advice/other ideas, my vet rings him quite often just to bounce a few more ideas around. I have vague recollections that he has contacts with someone near Braintree who MRI scans bunnies?

If the problem is with a diagnosis rather than the need for specialist intervention (at the moment anyway), it might be worth your vet ringing round a few referrals practices to see what they suggest and to see who seems the most appropriate for the problem you have. Good luck xxx

Thank youwendle :)

And thank you Santa.

I know of William but thank you of the name for the practice :)

I won't be touching South Beech with a barge pole. I found them appalling when I was last there and nearly ended up putting in a formal complaint.

Not heard of thd bloke in Haverhill so thank you :)

My vet is planning to have z ring round on Monday and I just wanted to be able to maybe put some other options forwards just in case they were needed.

Thank you very much guys. I'd forgotten about John Chitty and Ivan at Kynoch.

Ian Sayers is further than Richard Saunders.

Do Twickenham vets take referrals? Want to provide as many options as possible.

well I would say my vets would be good in this situation - they offer a range of treatments for palliative care (including accupuncture for pains etc) as well as ultra sound on site and MRI offerred off site.

I can honestly say Mrs Ford does not leave a stone unturned when looking for diagnosis - but you may want to go for the 'names' -

Hi not sure where you live by my vets are amazing, rabbit specialists and do referals. They are Great Western Referal vets in swindon.

May I just throw my bunny specialist - Simon Maddock of the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic (Northampton) into the melting pot please . I know the RSPCA in Norfolk used to refer cases to him. Simon's an amazing bunny (and piggy) vet and I have the utmost faith in his level of knowledge and care. Website here http://www.catandrabbit.co.uk/index.html.

Probably too far but my regular bunny expert vet is Alan Humphreys of Village Vets Liverpool.
Once Alan referred me to his friend Molly Varga who is Zoomed qualified - she is at Cheshire Vets nr Knutsford. Good luck x

I am with the same as Jenova. All creatures healthcare in Norwich. They are also a referral centre and have been fantastic with my buns with their weird and wonderful problems!
