  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Those that have used it for their bunnies what dose did you give please?

Please just tell me mls and how much bunny weighed to give me an idea I am rubbish at working out mg:oops:

Did you just use it for seizures ( which i assume would need a much higher dose) or have you used it for anything else?

thanks

ok - I am going to fail at the exactness - but we have used it on three different buns with very varying impact on them.

I have been told that this is very very typical of rabbits and also humans - one persons normal dose is anothers knock out so to speak.

Teasal (c2.4k I recall) only needed about 0.2mls to start looking 'relaxed' - whereas he would have been 'allowed' 1ml I seem to recall. (many years ago sadly)

We gave Parsley (c2.3k) the same dose and had no effect at all,

but his son Parsey Piert (same weight) literally sat in a stunned immovable state for an hour after we gave him the same and we were incredibly worried.

My vet says start with a low dose and work up if needs be.

PS Teasal was given it to relax his bladder and urinary muscles during bladder sludge issues; Parsley to relax during one of his (numerous) issues and injuries, andParsley Piert because he was in a stressed situation (which i dont want to get into details with).

I will try and dig out an old medicine bottle (trouble is we dont usually keep old meds) . . .

I had a feeling that the upper limit for Teasal was something huge like 1.5ml. (he only needed 0.2ml!)

. . . wanders away and rootles through old meds . . . .

OK . . have found a dose for what is desvribed on bottle as Valium but is I think exactly same thing . . (you may want to ask someone like JJ to check this). . .

It was prescribed for Lola (who was having stress issues as she had come out of a bad relationship with Charlie when we adopted them and owner wanted us to keep them together -very long story) . . anyway . . Lola weighs c2.5kgs (prob less then) and was prescribed 0.7mls twice daily.

Seem to recall it calmed her but did not knowck her out (not like PP!!!)

I will see if there is any vet about I can speak to tomorrow, if not monday, thanks twigs. Problem is I have a weeks worth of pre drawn up syringes so its going to be hard to change the dose with out wasting all the meds I have just paid for!

does that mean yours is injectible???? Ours was oral - best check if that makes a difference (usually seems to with most meds)

No we are giving it orally, but they drew the syringes up for us rather than putting it in a bottle, not sure why :?

hmm seems odd - we were just given huge bottle fulls each time . .

I recall being told it was very safe for use it east for the short terms we were using it (no idea about very long term) and recall them saying how very variable response doses were - as we then discovered !!!

Do you have an empty medicine bottle? You might be able to squirt all the doses into that and then re-use it if it's not going to 'spoil' the meds.

Spoken to the vet and he said I can double to dose which is good as it means I can just use two syringes at a time.

So from tonight Herman will be on 0.18mls twice a day

Now we have had a check up with Herman we have been able to ask more questions about the Diazepam as he is now going to be on it long term.

We were given the injectable version to give orally which is why it was pre-drawn. Now we are changing to long term use we have been given a prescription for a bottle of the oral solution that we have taken to our local pharmacy. We should be able to collect it Saturday morning :D

The oral solution is weaker than the injectable stuff as Herman's dose is now 0.43mls 2 x daily. So he was having the equivalent of that in injectable form and only weighs 1.7kg yet he is still binkying about and running up and down the stairs really fast  Can you imagine how manic he was without it!

I am actually thinking the dose on the prescription is too low now :? I think it is the equivalent of the first dose Herman had of 0.09mls and that it actually needs to be closer to 0.9ml in the oral solution to be the same as the 0.18 of injectable diazpam he is having:?

I have no idea until i pick up the bottle tomorrow

Why has this been made a sticky its not at all interesting :?

That was me and I didn't have a clue I'd done it.:oops::lol: I must have accidentally clicked before I replied.

Looks like the power of 'modness' has gone to your head ;):lol:

well its had loads of views now, so there are probably around 200 members wondering why on earth they need to be reminded about my Diazepam doses :lol:

:lol::lol: I just like keeping people on their toes! ;) *makes mental note to be more careful with the big scary buttons*

I was unable to get the oral diazepam, the pharmacy tried every one of their suppliers and no-one can source it for me so its a bit of a muddle now :(
