  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Whereabouts do you live? Perhaps someone can suggest a more rabbit-savvy vet near you?

I'm sorry I don't have experience of this I just think you need to get to a better vet ASAP

I really fear the Kit has mucoid enteritis, which is often fatal at such a young age.

Given that you cannot get to a Vet then all you can do is keep the Kit warm and very, very carefully syringe some fluids into him/her. If you have access to a rehydration solution used for treating diarrhoea in human babies- dioralyte/pedialyte then use that. Just syring 5-10ml of the fluids every half hour and after any episode of diarrhoea

I do think you need to prepare for the worst though

How old are your rabbits and where do you live?

Diarrhoea in a baby rabbit is very serious, your rabbit really needs to see a vet again ASAP. S/he will need fluids and antibiotics.

In the meantime until someone more knowledgeable than me can help I can only suggest you keep your rabbit warm. Do you have something like a hot water bottle that you could wrap in a towel to keep the bunny warm?

Please give location so that we can recommend a rabbit knowledgeable vet. The bunny needs to have injections of fluids and also various medicines that a rabbit experienced vet will be able to give. I am afraid that all you can doo is try and keep him warm and but this will not cure - you NEED a good vet asap.

If you are in foreign country with no rabbit vets all we can offer is the following:

Place rabbit in warm place and check that ears are warm (same temperature as the bun that is well); try very very very gently to give water in a small dropper or oral syringe BUT be aware that if the rabbit accidentally inhales the water rather than swallowing they will get water n lungs and die. If you are in a country where you can obtain a rehydration fluid or isotonic fluid (something with salts and sugars they give people with diarrea or sun stroke ) then use that - but do not try and make your own. If you have pellet rabbit food that bun was having then crush this down and mix to a paste and again try gently to put some in mouth. bearing in mind that again need to make ABSOLUTELY sure that bun is swallowing and does not breath it in.

PLEASE try and find a vet whatever country you are in.

Do you have emergency vets?

I would definitely get the rabbit there asap. Do you have rabbit specialist vets? I would at least call them for some advice on what to do, even if you can't get in to see them straight away.

Follow the advice of Jacks Jane also, she is very experienced with looking after rabbits and knows what she is talking about.

Really wish you the best of luck xxx
