  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Applying eye drops to puss-y eyes.

Is it best to clean out all the puss first?
I always do but Grim's eyes are so sore I would rather just squeeze the antibiotics in and not mess about opening his eyes and teasing out the puss. It would be more comfortable for him but is it less effective? I think if the puss is in the way the antibiotics can't get to the root of the infection?

I'm not sure about an answer to your question because it would depend on whether the pus is wet or dried, how much pus, etc. Don't suppose you have any photos showing Grim's eyes?

I just wanted to post to say that my vet has found oral zithromax to be really effective against most eye infections with white discharge. Zithromax is mainly used for stubborn respiratory infections and ear infections, but I guess that the common bacteria that causes eye infections is probably the same as causes these other types of infection (pasteurella probably).

Ooh thank you. It's wet, thick white puss. Very occasionally it's yellow. I have posted pictures before but not with the puss. I'll ask my vet about the zithromax.

Just an update. I'm getting him some local anaesthetic for when they're really sore as my vet is reluctant to put him on anything else right now. So hopefully that will help. :)
