2 bunnies were advertised "free to good home" on facebook. I was concerned as they apparently had to go together, one is a doe and one a buck and neither are neutered. I decided to post and say that I may be able to help but I would need to see them first, they said on facebook that they had 3 hutches and whoever took the buns could pick one for them. I have managed to convince them to give me two of the hutches in case the doe is pregnant, I only want to the hutches because I have nothing to keep them in otherwise. The hutches are really not suitable for a bunny and I would not want them in there for more than a week. :(

I went to visit the bunnies today. The buck is a lionhead called Jasper (all grey with such a cute white nose!) and the other is a black nethie called Poppy. Jasper is deifinitely a buck and I'm almost 100% sure Poppy is a doe, the owners said they've been together a year with no kits and seen them "doing the business". She didn't seem pregnant to me but I'm no expert when it comes to pregnant bunnies. When I picked them up they are horribly underweight  they weigh nothing and are just bags of bones . I just said to the owner that they are a bit skinny (huge under statement) but otherwise look ok.

I can take them to the rescue I volunteer at but only temporarily! As some people may know the rescue doesn't specialise in bunnies and these 2 really need some tlc, we are also in between sites and it's not practical to keep more bunnies when the owner struggles with the animals she already has. Can anybody possibly help? I can transport so far but obviously not miles away.
I am really concerned about these 2 and Jasper is such a sweet bunny. Poppy is a little skitish and doesn't seem to like being handled much but I think she would settle down in no time. By the sounds of it they didn't really have much to do with Poppy, handling wise. If I can't find them somewhere then who knows where they will end up.

Ah yes you are. :( I can go part of the way but I can't go the full way. Hopefully somebody will come along who can help with transport or even offer them another place. Thank you for replying so quickly. :)

Well done for trying to help these buns

Just in case you're unaware: Please be careful to quarantine them from your own buns if they are coming to your house temporarily & wash your hands thoroughly and change your clothes before handling your own animals.

I hope someone can help with transport and foster :)

Oh yes I always wash my hands after handling any "strange" animals. I wish they could come here temporarily :( I feel bad asking the rescue owner to take them in when she's already got so much on her plate.

If I can take them in then it would solve a lot of problems and I could get them here tomorrow! I have an outdoor run they could go in (separately) and a large hutch which was originally a small dog kennel so I'd only need to take the one hutch from the owners. One of the hutches has a huge whole where Jasper tried to chew his way out...i don't blame him.

I live with my parents and I know they will just say no..but I will ask anyway. I have a massive garden and a garage...you'd think they could spare some space for a few weeks. :( The only problem I have is that I can't really afford vet care for 2 extra bunnies, feeding, bedding and hay is not a problem.

Are you splitting them?
I can't afford them, but I could probably have one outdoors... If you split them and your parents let you take one, I could ask my mam if she'd be willing to have one outdoors for a few days while you try and sort something else?

I feel bad that I couldn't help with hay and bedding though. And not even sure my mam would say yes if it was an idea you'd want!

I'm arguing now with my parents that I have a whole garden for them. But if I took any of them it would only be temporary until I can either get one or both to Great Yarmouth to Jeneva or to another rescue/fosterer closer by.

To be honest if they've been together for a year I think it would be mean to spit them. They could both be boys.
I don't think iIcould afford vet bills but if it was a foster situation I would happily take them both, get them back on their feet until they are rehomed.

The rescue I volunteer for wouldn't be able to fund you :( but maybe another rescue could. I can't sit back and do nothing. I will just bring them here for now and my Dad will just have to get over it. I don't want to split them really but I'm sure Poppy is a doe...either that or a neutered buck and that is highly unlikely but not impossible. I think they spend their day together and their nights in separate hutches so she should have been pregnant countless times over a year.
I was ok with them going to the rescue until I saw how skinny they were. They need a proper diet and some tlc, I can only do so much. If I get them here I can at least get them a health check at the vets and Poppy's sex determined (and check she's not pregnant). I wouldn't be able to afford a spay/neuter or any major vet bills; I would never be allowed to have them here that long if I get them here at all...You wouldn't think I was 23.

Thankyou I will keep you in mind if I need them to get there. Can anybody reccomend any rescues around here? I am slightly panicking about taking on these buns even short term in case they go into stasis/bloat from being so skinny. Any change in their diet added to the stress of moving them is going to be pretty risky as it is and I don't know enough about seriously skinny buns to know what is best for them.

Does anybody have space for either one or both of hese babies? I don't want to split them, ideally it would be lovely to have them neutered and rebonded but if they need to be split then I will split them.

Yes! My Dad has just said they can come here for now! This means I can get them today and get them out of the situation they are in now. After work I will go and pick them up, bring them here and give them a proper assessment. I will ring/email all the rescues in the area and see if anybody is willing to take them but I only want bunny rescues or people who know about bunnies because of their condition.

Well done :thumb: Hope they are with you soon and getting the TLC they deserve

I wonder if you could think about different ways to raise funds to help with costs? Maybe a sponsored something or other & get friends & family to pledge?

can you pay for the first vet check?
this is the trouble..kindness makes you want to help but if no rescue comes forward to take them what will you do?

I am prepared to wait for a space at a rescue. I can pay for their first vet check and I will take them tomorrow if I can get the car. It's spaying/neutering I won't be able to afford as well as my own bunnies' needs/vet bills. Fiver currently has sore hocks and so I need to completely change my room around and buy lots of fleece and soft things (just got a vetbed), Xena has an ulcer on her eye which is taking forever to heal up and so she is back and forth from the vets with that.
On top of that I work part time and volunteer at 2 different places, I use my Dad's car so I have to work around that and my vets is about a 20-30 min drive away.
Also if the doe is pregnant there is no way I can keep her here, my Dad would completely flip. I will figure something out though...things usually work out in the end. I'm focusing on getting them out of their situation and at least giving them a chance to a loving home, food, hay and space. Push comes to shove then I could always ask friends to help, and if things get really desperate I have savings I can dip into.

How long should I wait before starting to change their food? I have some SS junior pellets they can have as they are currently eating the crappy mix stuff. Is there anything specific that will put weight on a bunny?

have pm'd you

Re weight gain..slowly..get their teeth checked as could be a contributing factor

then SS pellets are fine but to be honest the flaked pea and corn in mix will be more fattening ..slowly introduce veg..VERY small amounts so as not to uspet their tums..lots of hay
