Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Help needed with bladder stone issues.

Canidae

Warren Scout
My 6 year old Bo recently had an operation to remove a large stone from his bladder (3 months ago). Previous to this he was becoming covered in urine, so much that I was bathing him everyday, getting sock hocks due to the urine and acting different to normal such as carpet chewing for the first time. The first vet I saw put him on a course of metacam and baytril but after a couple of days I started seeing blood in his urine and took him back to the vets.
A different vet this time gave him an x-ray and the stone was obvious even to me. The next morning he had an op to remove it. this is the stone by a 10p. Sorry for the pic quality.

Now only 3 months later he has started being urine soaked again although not as bad as before. I took him to the vets last night and the vet couldn't feel anything in the bladder and took a urine sample (waiting for him to call me this morning). Bo is back on metacam and baytril.

He is eating and pooping fine but is shedding like mad and has lost a little weight.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do to help him?

Unfortunately recurrent bladder stones can occur. Has Bo had his kidney function checked, calculi can effect the kidneys too.

Does he drink enough ?

Where you given advice re modifying his diet to reduce his calcium intake ?

Does he have any other health problems, especially mobility issues or Dental disease ?

Thankyou for your reply

No kidney function checked.

We did have an issue with his drinking but since moving his bowl in his cage and adding another water bowl under the table he is drinking more.

No advice given about diet only asked what I fed him on.

No prolems with teeth, they were checked last night and his movements are normal.

Just had the vet ring about the urine sample. No blood or signs of stones/excess calcium but he said that he saw protozoa movement in the urine which isn't normal? He is going to call some people at Bristol who have a rabbit clinic to find out more and get back to me. A quick google is just confusing me more!
