The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Whats the best way to treat mites?

Young Bun
Hi guys,
I took Bertie to the vet last week to have his VHD jab and while we were there the vet picked up that he had some dandruff which he thinks might be mites.

He gave him a drop of ivermectin, but I have forgotten how long he said this lasts and when I should next do it again, and how long it will take to clear up, if it is mites. I can pop back down to the vet to ask, not a problem as I'm only a five minute walk away but as its really early this morning and I am awake(mean other half for waking me up as he left for work) lol!!! I thought I would ask you guys if you knew?

Also is there anything else I can put on him, do they do mite powder or anything? It's been a while since having rabbits, everything has changed what you should and should not do with them. I have alwayshad and now have 3 lovely piggy boys.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

I'd give them a ring :)

When my lops had mites they had one injection of ivermectin and then an ivermectin spray to use at home a week or two later so I can't really answer your question.

Usually three injections about a week apart clears it :D
Mine had panamec as I didnt want to use spot on for fear of them grooming one another

I only have the one, so no worries about grooming one another. I have been looking into shampoos etc, it doesn't seem to bother him too much, it does look like it is starting to clear up, slowly. If it gets worseI'll take him back. I was reading on the net that the ivermectin is every year or am i looking at something else?

cheers

I wouldn't bother with a shampoo. It's not a good idea to give rabbits a bath unless absolutely necessary and I don't think shampoos actually get rid of the mites anyway.
