Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cataracts

Hi all,

I've just noticed a small white clouded patch on one of my eldest bucks' irises.

Can cataracts develop there instead of just the lens? If not, what could this be?

Thanks

Is it in the iris or just over the top of it on the cornea? It could be a corneal ulcer (bacteria growing into the cornea), but it could extend into the iris as well so it might look as though it's there. I had one once (also I know that rabbits can have them), so not sure about treatment in rabbits but I had to have antibacterial eye drops. Cataracts are when the lens goes cloudy so it won't be in the iris so I reckon it's more likely to be an ulceration or something different (don't know of other eye problems in rabbits but there probably is a range of possible things it could be). Perhaps go see a vet for a check up just in case it is a problem?

It seemed to be on the eye more than in the eye, if I remember rightly (just had to Google 'cornea' as I don't know what that is). But I'll have another look tomorrow.

At first I thought it was bedding or hay, but the eye itself is clean and bright, not crusty or watery. I'll have it checked out but when I look again tomorrow I'll take a photo of it to post on here as I can't find any photos online that look like what he has so can't explain how it is :?

Thanks :)
