  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Abscess above eye :(

Our elderly girl Daisy has been through the wars lately and to add to her problems she has now developed a massive abscess above her eye. The vet lanced it yesterday and we have been regularly cleaning it but the pus keeps coming. She's now on penicillin injections every other day but our first attempt was disastrous as the end shot off and the penicillin ended up on her back. I washed it off and tried again, thankfully it worked on the second attempt.

I feel so sorry for her as she's already on Metacam for the arthritis, Panacur for EC and now has an erupting abscess to deal with which is so large it has forced her eye shut. She has been through such a lot in her life and we have nearly lost her three times over the years but she is a tough bunny and a real fighter.

I have some manuka honey which I used on a previous bunnies abscess. Should I give it a go?

I think the honey is a good idea but I'd speak to the vet first just to make sure it won't interfere with anything. Is it a really high strength?
Penicillin has always worked amazingly with my rabbits when I've used a long course (8 weeks). Good luck abscesses are horrible.
