  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I think weve found a lump

madcatwoman

Mama Doe
We have a rew that we rescued last November, shes about 6yrs old, we had her spayed as soon as we got her.

Anyway Sunday is big muck out and bum checking day! We have found a lump on her left side just sort of on the edge of her belly, if you stroke her side you cant feel it but if you stroke slightly under her you can. Its about as long as your thumb nail and soft and raised up. She is totally fine, eating/drinking, weeing/pooing running round the garden like a loon.

Our vets doesnt open sundays so i rang the emergency vet for advice and they say as long as shes ok in herself to leave it till tomorrow. Which i am fine with but I just wondered if I am looking at something nasty and if I should prepare the kids, again.

I feel that as she was spayed so late it could maybe be something sinister from that or maybe, she says hopefully just a cyst??

I am pondering, after doing a bit of google, if it could be a mammory tumour which fills me with horror. Jst had a £300 vet bill for the cat last week so really, really not in a position for another big bill and I presume it would be expensive??

I would not start stressing yet, it may be something very minor. Just wait til you have more facts before jumping to worst case scenarios (as I always do, must listen to my own advice )

Good luck at the Vets and please keep us updated xx

I know I should stop googling. Just discussing it with my hubby, when we rescued her we were told she was at least 5 and a half, she hadnt been spayed, vaccinated etc. Weve done all these things and whilst we have a duty of care to her we are wondering if it is a mammary tumor if we should let her live her life out as best she can or if we should bombard her with surgery etc. I know it could just be an abcess but with the luck we have I just cant see it being that simple. I really dont know what we should do for the best if faced with that situation. I suppose i will have to see what the vet says really. Dont get me wrong its not that I dont want to pay for her an operation, I would willingly do it, I am thinking of her and if its fair to do all that to her 6 months after being spayed and with her being so happy bonded to Ozzie.

I thought I found a lump on Mischa in a similar area, turns out it was his cecum

So don't panic yet :)

What a cecum? Am I going to be the only bunny owner who doesnt know what one is? and do female rabbits have one?

It's part of their digestive tract and female rabbits have them too. They store food there to reingest later on. :)
